Meet Tamar Canady

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamar Canady.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Photography has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. My mother showed me that cameras were not only for ‘special’ occasions or family vacations. In high school, my photography instructor revealed the magic that was silver halides developing into images I had exposed, by immersing them into chemicals I had mixed and made into prints I had produced in the school darkroom. Later I worked my way through ASU at a portrait studio, learning to pose people and to connect with them at the same time. Whether at work or play, whether my camera is in hand or not, this is the way I see life- like I am always photographing every moment.

Please tell us about your art.
Do you know that feeling when a particular moment catches your attention, and you pause, because the very feel of it is so distilled right then that you catch your breath because you know that that exact moment will never happen again? That is what I strive to capture with my photography. Some moments you can anticipate; a first kiss, tiny baby toes, a diploma, and a handshake. Others happen quickly, or quietly- your little girl reading at bedtime, hands clasped in shared grief, the aunties with the giggles. Even then, it takes something more to capture the feeling behind the action. Photography is all about light, and I have spent and will spend my life trying to learn its secrets. How light on a bride conveys joy, and sunshine in a child’s messy curls reveals innocence, and a shadow behind an expectant mother holds its breath with anticipation. Light is the magic that reveals the sublime in both the special days and the random Tuesday afternoons, and those are the images I try to capture.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
I have personally joined several Facebook groups of photographers, and it is very interesting to see what is trending out there. Some ideas I love, and others I appreciate, while I know that they will never be my own style. It helps me see where I can grow, and to also see how far I’ve come.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I am most active on Instagram, and I keep my website very up to date. I am available for all kinds of bookings, from infants to weddings, to commissioned landscapes or art prints of your home!
