Meet Tamaki Matsumoto of Tamaki Matsumoto Art Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamaki Matsumoto.

Tamaki, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I start learning art in 2008, I and my family moved from Japan to Arizona and I transferred to the art school, New School for the Art and Academic. When I moved here, I suffered from a language barrier, but when I was painting rose for art assignments and one of the classmates come to talk to me and said “I like it! Can I have your rose?” Art helped me to overcome the language barrier and these happy moments motivate me to work on art. My parent is a huge support for me to keep working on my art. Many of Asian parent pressure children to stop pursuing art, but my parent gives me support and advice with art. I don’t know if I able to keep working without my parent help.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Currently, I am facing trouble and struggling with how can I overcome it. I want mentors who can guide me or give me advice on how can I move from my situation. My friend is my current mentor and motivation for me to step forward, but I need another person to break through my wall. People who only know from outside think my road looks smooth, but I always have mental trouble. I am just starting out my life and I believe I will meet the right person to move to my next stage.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I feel success when people give me positive comments on my artworks and meet new people through my art.
