Meet Taj Musik

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taj Musik.

Taj, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Music started for me when I was 12 or 13 years old when my cousin Carl first was gifted a mixer for Christmas. We messed around with it and started recording covers of some of our favorite songs.

About a year later, he invited me to perform “Let’s Get it Started” by the Black Eyed Peas at one of the shows his band at the time booked. When it came time to perform, I was insanely nervous, and when the music started playing, I forgot all the lyrics I had memorized, but there was something about being on stage. I loved the adrenaline, the fact that I was front and center and everyone was focused on me.

Since then, I signed to a label and then left that as well. I’m now an independent artist, happier than I ever been, and ready to take over not only the state but the country and then the world. I believe in my team, I believe in the product we are gearing up to release and most importantly, I believe in myself.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh man, it’s been far from a smooth road. From feeling like a puppet at a label I was signed to for the better part of 4 years, to videographers coming in and out of the picture, to my personal life taking a huge blow because of the attention I give music, it’s been challenging to say the least.

My hardest struggle is finding people who can match my work ethic and drive. Everyone says they have a “passion” for what they do, but when push comes to shove they end up chasing the money, or just brush it aside to do something else instead, it doesn’t make sense to me. I think the biggest obstacles I’ve faced to date, includes being able to balance my personal life as well as music and wanting to do everything independently.

Having to give up a 4-year relationship because of the attention I have music, wasn’t easy, but it came down to how much do I love music, and that’s unmeasurable. Being independent is a struggle because everything is self-funded, etc. etc. but I’ll be honest, the creative freedom I have at this point, versus being in the label, is worth all the extra hard work I have to do to stay independent.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
Electrifying shows, music with a meaning, and NSD (Never Stop Dreaming). I pride myself in putting on highly energetic and entertaining shows. I feed off the crowd, and I believe most crowds feed off me very well. It’s a high energy full of excitement type of performance. Music with content has been lacking as of late, and I’d love to bring that back. Eminem has and will always be my idol.

I love his music because of the fact that each individual song tells a story. You get a glimpse into his mindset and life if you just focus on the lyrics and think about the messages he’s delivering, plus every album is like a timeline of his life, it’s incredible, a pure genius. I want to do that. I want each song to be a little window into my soul, a way for my fans to get a little of me with every line, lyric, song that I write.

I want my music to be personal. Never stop dreaming becomes self-explanatory. I have it tattooed on my arm, but basically, it’s to never stop dreaming even when times get rough. Even when it feels like there’s no point anymore, all it takes is one song, one big break and you’re on your way to where you want to be. Never stop dreaming.

Is there a specific memory from when you were younger that you really miss?
Oh, there’s so many. I guess the best memory that is both awesome and relates to this article is that when I was a kid, I’d make little flyers for my “concerts” I’d put on in the living room and force my family to sit and watch me perform my set.

I was like five-six years old, but best believe I was getting down. I’d play some N’Sync, some Disney songs, a couple of rap songs, whatever I felt like. I’d have a mini guitar I had no idea how to play, but I’d strum it here and there randomly during my performance!

The coolest thing is that my whole family played along. So here are 10-15 people (extended family included) sitting there watching a kid do God knows what and acting like they loved it!
