Meet Tabatha Russell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tabatha Russell.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I started taking photos freshman year of high school because my mom used to work in a camera shop and always told me how fascinating she thought cameras were. I started with black and white photography using a Minolta X-700 to shoot film and I fell in love instantly. Since then, I’ve gone over to digital, but I still occasionally pull out the film. Photography is such a way for me to escape or to focus on what I feel is beautiful in life. I love being able to see something through my eyes and then being able to capture it for a lifetime.

Please tell us about your art.
Photography is a passion hobby of mine. I am very partial to portrait photography and fashion photography. Creating beautiful photos for people is a really unique experience. It’s such a gratifying feeling to be able to capture someone’s beauty and to be able to share that experience with them when they are able to see the results. Photography is fun for me, I’m not in it to make money, in fact, I would rather take impromptu trips to Sedona or Arcosanti with a friend or two just to have a mini day shoot. What I really want people to get out of my work is that there is beauty in all people and places. Photos always have a story and sometimes the story can be sad, but capturing moments like they were meant to be captured is so beautiful to me.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
I really like to reach out to other photographers on Instagram and ask them if they want to collaborate. I personally know a few people who are really great with makeup and some models who are always up for a shoot. I love being able to go out and shoot with other photographers because it’s interesting to see how they capture the exact same subject that you did. No two photographers are going to have the same style or eye, but that’s what makes photography so great.
