Meet Susan Garner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Garner.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My love of creating started at a young age. My father is an amazing artist. Much of my childhood was spent in his studio watching him create. I even have one of his old film cameras on display in my living room. I always knew I wanted to be an artist. After completing my BFA from the University of Utah in fine art, I found myself more drawn toward photography. While I do currently teach art lessons (and absolutely love it!!), I also love the feeling I get when I am able to capture my vision in camera. Since discovering my passion for photography, I have been working toward building my brand. I am self-taught. I cannot tell you how many hours I have spent learning techniques, but It is amazing what you can learn from experience and fellow photographers!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, I wish I could say it has been a smooth road, but unfortunately, it hasn’t. The biggest struggle I face, like many mothers, is balancing my work with my family. However, I am blessed to have a supportive family who encourages me every day. And of course, my two children are my favorite models!

Susan Garner Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My current work is rather eclectic. While I have worked with brides, families, seniors, prom-goers, nature, and others, I specialize in family and infant sessions (Fresh 48). Young children are magic to photograph. Their emotions and reactions are just so fresh and unpretentious. I try to look for different angles and perspectives. I don’t see a model when I look through my lens, I see an emotion, an angle and another chance to freeze a moment in time.

Do you feel like there are certain traits that increase the likelihood of success?
I think it is very important to make sure that my clients feel open and comfortable with me. If they don’t understand or like a pose or prompt, I encourage them to express themselves. I hope that my clients leave our session thinking about how much fun it was. It should be a pleasant positive experience, not just a photo session. I am very dedicated. I was taught from a young age the importance of hard work. I also try my very best to be patient, particularly with my young models. I have children, I know how stressful photo sessions can be for models and clients!
