Meet Susan Canasi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Canasi.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I believe that I was born to be an artist. Beginning with early childhood, I was very imaginative, creative, and observant of the world around me. My passion for botanical themes began at an early age. At my childhood home in Michigan, my sisters and I helped tend to a variety of beautiful flowers; roses, irises, daffodils, and lilies. During the summer, our vegetable garden produced fast growing plants and vegetables that I observed with fascination. Following my graduation with a BA of Fine Arts from Wayne State University, I moved to Tempe to study at ASU where I received my Master of Fine Arts degree.

Please tell us about your art.
I have been creating my metal artwork for the past 17 years. My sculptures are made from copper, brass, aluminum, and steel. When I began designing in metal, I felt an immediate connection to the myriad possibilities of how this medium would allow me to achieve a unique vision for my art. By using a variety of metals, I shape and finish each piece to capture my creative expression. I use traditional welding techniques and apply them in innovative ways to accomplish my vision. My inspiration is derived from my interpretation of our natural environment and reflects strength, beauty, and harmony. I have had the creative opportunity to design and fabricate over 50 major commissions that were designed to enhance a variety of both indoor and outdoor settings. I enjoy the collaborate process, one that allows me to create a unique vision that is perfect for each environment.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
Artists often struggle to be able to create art due to financial concerns. As with other creative careers, it is always good to have a second income producing career, preferably one that connects to your artistic skills. I have worked as an arts educator for over 30 years and enjoyed sharing my artistic skills and knowledge with others.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
There are several opportunities to view my artwork in the Phoenix Metropolitan area. I am a member of TheStore at the Mesa Arts Center, an artist cooperative gallery. I also have artwork on display at the TCArtShop at Tempe Center for the Arts. I am a juried member of the Sonoran Arts League and participate annually in Hidden in the Hills Studio Tour and Sale. The event will be held this year November 22-24 and November 29-December 1. For more information on the tour, go to www.hiddeninthehills.org. To see more of my artwork, go to www.susancanasi.com. I am also available by appointment.
