Meet Sunny Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sunny Jones.

Sunny Jones

Hi Sunny, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always noticed things. As a kid, I remember being in awe of a new place I’ve never been like the beach or a mountain or a super old house or building that felt like stepping into a movie set. After taking in the whole picture, I would dive into the details and notice the fabrics and colors, and I’d pay attention to how sunlight filled a room, furniture choices, and art. Especially the art. Unique oil paintings or one of those fancy 8×10 silver gilded picture frames with the velvet backing that was perfectly placed on a crocheted tablecloth covering my great-grandma’s old piano. I fell in love with the idea that a film camera could capture a single moment in time that’s just there, forever. I don’t have a great memory myself, so the idea that I’m giving myself a piece of my own history at the same time that I’m giving moms and dads a cherished moment of their family embracing is what really drives me. The stolen sweet moments from a wedding that no one else but me got to see. How lucky, right?!? I see the beauty in everything and everyone, so my fulfillment comes in trying to capture all that love.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The weight of expectations that comes from capturing so much love hits heavy, especially with photographers. We know you want beauty and perfection. We do, too! We also have to be grounded in the authenticity of how we chose to tell a story. Editing has always been my favorite and least favorite thing to do. Nothing makes you question yourself or your sanity more than the millions of editing tweaks you make throughout your photography career. But there’s also nothing more satisfying that seeing the before and after on a final image and knowing that that piece of art came from you.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My career started in Utah in 2010 when I was fortunate enough to have attracted more unconventional Brides and Grooms. This led to elopements in the middle of the Uinta Mountains or desert canyon ceremonies. I got addicted, not only documenting but also connecting with all these beautiful souls! A big piece of my life was dedicated to weddings until I started to get more notice in Family and Newborn Photography, and I loved it so much I always made myself available for it. 2020 and moving to Arizona in 2021 brought my career to a halt, so this particular part of my journey is allowing myself to be seen again and finding the passion within to create again. This past October, I took a two-week trip to Utah for Fall family sessions and seeing my elevated creativity and more fine-tuned skills is what makes me the most proud of my work right now. I’m excited to share more, and hopefully, other creatives will resonate with my images, and maybe they’ll feel that they need me as much as I need them.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
This isn’t related to photography in any way but I thought it would be fun to mention that I also create and share memes! You can find my twisted elder millennial humor (heavy movie references and relatable parenting humor) at @kiss_my_memes ( @kiss_my_memes ) on Instagram. Over 30,000 followers now!

I started it during the meme boom of 2020 and it has blossomed into an unconventionally hilarious way for me to share positive vibes and laughter every single day.
Big THANK YOU to Voyage Phoenix for the Interview!
