Meet Steve Long

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Long.

Steve, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been attracted to and involved in art, and even from a very early age, I knew I wanted to work in some sort of creative field. For many years, I produced commercial art for small and large businesses. Developing logos and creating marketing materials to help companies sell their products and services. Some of my clients have included PetSmart, QuikTrip, Best Western, ASU, PBS Channel Eight and Maricopa Community Colleges.

I recently started publishing comic books under the name Loathsome Comics and have been enjoying all the creative aspects of producing these books!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One of the toughest parts of publishing is meeting deadlines. Things don’t always happen as fast as I would like them to, but you just have to be patient and keep moving the project forward. Even if it’s just a little bit at a time. Creating a comic book is a commitment both in time and money. It involves pulling together many people with different skills and talents. The challenge is finding the time and finances to push through and complete each issue. Some are easier than others, but holding that finished printed book in your hand is very satisfying!

Tell us about your company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
We are a publishing company that specializes in comics, music and art. Our genres include horror, science-fiction, superhero and fantasy. Any creative works that involve those themes are the products our clients enjoy most, so that is what we look to provide!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I was fortunate to grow up in a family that encouraged creativity. My father was an English literature professor and my mother was a registered nurse. There are many illustrators I’ve been motivated by such as Frank Frazetta, Michael Whelan and Joe Kubert.

As far as our publications are concerned, I have had the good fortune of working with some fantastic artists, inkers, pencilers and colorists. Thanks to the internet I’ve been able to assemble some great creative teams. Rod Luper and Charle Oak are both fantastic artists who have penciled many stories for Loathsome Comics. They are able to tell our frightening stories in very dramatic ways. Carlos Eduardo is an amazing inker who has been with us for a few years now. And we recently added a colorist named Micheal Sanders who is very talented.

Look up loathsome entertainment on Instagram where we regularly post examples of their great work! Also, we are always looking for new artists and creative individuals. If you are interested in possibly working with us, please send a link to your portfolio to loathsomecomics@gmail.com.
