Meet Stephen Scotti of Ekonovah in Phoenix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Scotti.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My parents signed me up for piano lessons when I was two years old, so I was always involved with music, and pretty much always knew how to listen to music with an analytical ear. In mid-2012, after many failed attempts at creating bands, I downloaded music software to create electronic dance music. I quickly became apparent how fulfilling the process was – being in control of all the instruments and getting to make all of the final calls really excited me. After several years of producing electronic music, I started to realize what genre style really resonated with me: house music. I’ve been producing for about six and a half years now and still get the same excitement I did back in 2012!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has been smooth for the most part. The rockiest parts came from my own self-doubt or my own unhealthy work ethic. The moment I saw the damage these two things were creating was the same moment that a switch flipped inside my head. I have a very healthy work ethic now, and I try to adhere to a schedule each day to make music.

What else should we know?
While I have experience in producing a plethora of different styles, I’m best known for producing a combination of tech and bass house styles that I’ve coined as ‘Ekotech.’ I’ve always found melodies quite alluring, yet many genres of EDM that I really enjoy are bass-driven and focus on rhythm instead. So I try to marry these two. I essentially ask myself, “How can I make something very melodic and catchy, yet still bass-heavy and something that would fit a bass house set?” I think this style is what sets me apart from my peers.

How do you define success?
Success to me simply means being happy and finding fulfillment in what you do. I’d never find success in some 9-5, regardless of the pay, because that isn’t a sustainable format for me to be happy. Music grants me true happiness; I want to make music for the rest of my life! That’s success, to me.
