Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophie Dorsten.
Sophie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been singing ever since I could talk – but that’s what they all say I guess.
I have been performing around the Valley since I was 9. It started with vocal lessons at a place called Garage Rock Academy where they teach you an instrument and place you in a band – well my brothers and I started a band – my older brother was on guitar and my youngest brother was on drums. That’s when Sophie & the Boyz started – I would sing and play bass guitar. After about 3 years the band broke up and I decided to learn the acoustic guitar and do it on my own. I took lessons for a couple of months learning the basics and then basically taught myself. I now perform a couple times a week at various venues around the Phoenix area. I have performed at The Marquee Theatre, The Listening Room, Hard Rock Cafe, Alice Cooperstown (and the show at The Pressroom that commemorated it’s closing), Queen Creek Olive Mill, SoZo CoffeeHouse, Bergies Coffee Roast House, The Farm at South Mountain, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Tempe Marketplace, The Van Buren, Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock, and so many more, as well as the City of Mesa, Town of Gilbert and various local festivals such as Mesa Music Festival.
This past fall I competed in Alice Cooper’s Proof is in the Pudding talent search and not only did I make it to finals but I won third place for solo artists. What an amazing night that was. I love being a part of Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock teen center – I not only teach vocal lessons there now but I volunteer at Alice Cooper’s Golf Tournament in the spring. It’s an amazing organization giving teens a place to go to learn an instrument or art or dance – all for free.
Last spring I sang the National Anthem at a Chicago Cubs (v. SF Giants) and a LA Dodgers (v. AZ Diamondbacks) spring training game – this year I have 3 lined up so far. What an honor to sing our National Anthem!
I recorded my first EP in 2016 titled Beauty of the Heart when I was 13 years old – it has 3 originals and 2 fun covers on it – you can find them under Sophie Dorsten on all music sources such as iTunes, Spotify, etc. I also made my first music video to the title song Beauty of the Heart in 2017 – you can find it on YouTube. I am currently recording some new songs and will release them soon.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am 15 years old and I perform all around the Valley. I perform my originals as well as fun covers. I love sharing my music with others – I like to send a positive and encouraging message.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Phoenix seems to be a great place for music right now. I know so many amazing bands and solo artists and the opportunities we have is awesome – you just need to work for it and go get them.
