Hi Sonja, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey into photography wasn’t a straight line—it was born from a deep love of storytelling after losing my Mother to cancer and a desire to make women feel seen, celebrated, and powerful. I started Sonja Stafford Photography after years of working in other fields (Finance to be exact), however always feeling drawn to portraiture but unsure how to turn that passion into a career. Once I picked up my camera with true intention, everything changed.

At first, I photographed everything—families, events, anything that gave me practice. But over time, I discovered what truly lit me up: photographing women, especially those who often put themselves last. Maternity, glamour, and branding sessions became my focus because they hold so much potential for transformation and empowerment.

Today, I run a boutique portrait studio that specializes in crafting luxury experiences for women. It’s not just about taking a pretty picture—it’s about helping each client reconnect with their beauty, confidence, and strength. Every woman who steps in front of my lens has a story, and my mission is to honor that with intention, artistry, and heart.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like any small business, my journey hasn’t been without its challenges. The Covid-19 shutdowns in 2019 and 2020 were incredibly difficult, and the shifts in our economy have added their own layers of uncertainty. As a luxury service, I understand that professional portraits can feel like a big investment—especially during times of financial stress.

But what I’ve learned is this: when someone chooses to invest in themselves—whether through branding imagery or a personal portrait session—the return is so much greater than the cost. It’s not just about the photos; it’s about how they feel walking away. My clients leave with renewed confidence, a deeper connection to their identity, and powerful visuals that elevate their brand, business, or self-worth. That kind of transformation is priceless, and I pour everything into making sure the experience is worth every penny.

At Sonja Stafford Photography, I specialize in luxury portrait experiences for women—particularly in maternity, glamour, and personal branding. My work is all about celebrating women at every stage of life and helping them reconnect with their beauty, power, and presence in front of the camera.

I’m known for creating an experience that goes far beyond the photos themselves. From the moment a client walks into my studio, it’s about transformation—emotionally and visually. I guide each woman through professional styling, posing, and a personalized session that’s designed to reflect who she truly is. The final images are elegant, bold, and deeply empowering.

What sets me apart is the intention behind everything I do. I’m not just taking a photo—I’m holding space for someone to be seen, celebrated, and honored. My sessions are collaborative, affirming, and filled with warmth. I’ve had women cry seeing themselves in a way they hadn’t in years—that’s the magic I aim to create every single time.

I’m most proud of the impact my work has on confidence and self-worth. Seeing a woman walk away standing a little taller, with photos that remind her who she is—that’s what drives me every day.
