Today we’d like to introduce you to Solstice Campbell
Hi Solstice, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
By the time I was in middle school, I was already obsessed with Hip-Hop. I mean, watching documentaries on whatever artists I could find, buying bootleg CDs from the local liquor store, memorizing the rap battles from 8 Mile levels of obsession. Naturally, I ended up making my own music, and after a good while, it started going pretty well. I was doing little shows around town, ended up signing some deals (those were short-lived), and even found myself on a little California tour. But the whole time this happens, another passion grows inside. With every peek over my engineer’s shoulder, I became more enamored with the magic he seemed to do, taking my raw vocals and transforming them into radio-ready ‘hits’ in what felt like seconds. So once my wave of popularity waned, I started looking into schools to become an audio engineer and was quickly reminded about CRAS (I looked into it in high school.) I enrolled as soon as possible, got my travel arranged, and the next thing I knew, I was in Phoenix, Arizona. It wasn’t my first time moving away, but it felt different and more serious this time. Determined to make my people proud, I dug in and kept up my rent payments despite having to switch jobs 4 times, all while maintaining a 4.0 and even joining the mentorship team. Now, as I’m nearing the end of my post-CRAS internship, I’m focused on taking all that I’ve learned at CRAS and using it to build my music career and help out as many artists as I can along the way.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh, my goodness, was money a problem. Not to say that everything is peachy keen now, but before I figured out a little side hustle? Mannn, I was doing a monthly fast the last week of every month, trying to keep enough money in my account. There was one period in particular, where I was juggling 2 part-time jobs while somehow finding the time to mix an entire movie scene (down to the rustling clothes) for a class project. Somehow on top of all of this, I would still find myself hanging out in after-hours studio sessions trying to perfect that one snare sound in a song I was trying prep for release (I’m…I’m gonna get to it okay.) That was definitely an era of extra-large coffees.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I primarily make music under the name Callmesolstice. So far, I’ve amassed around a quarter million streams across all platforms, and I’m getting ready to release a bunch of new music over the next few months. One of my biggest obstacles in the past was the cost of making music and my lack of knowledge on releasing it. Now that I’m armed with a top-notch CRAS education, the goal from here is to really put my all into this music thing and get where I know I can go. I’ve also been working out of Grand Ave Studios, mixing for people and recording clients here and there. If anyone out there is looking for a new engineer, definitely consider hitting me up.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Did I mention I’m an audio engineer? Most of my experience is in Hip-Hop but I’m very comfortable mixing R&B, Rock, and Indie music as well. By the way did I mention I went to CRAS (the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences if you didn’t know the acronym?)
