Meet Solomon Cruz of So-Low in Central

Today we’d like to introduce you to Solomon Cruz.

Solomon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I always had a love for music and created a bond with it at a very young age. I loved creating mixed CD’s and took pride in creating a perfect CD and getting the track listings and crossfades perfect for a seamless playthrough. I wanted to create my music and even started writing poetry/raps to which I would try to rap over a beat. I was very self-conscious over my voice and figured it would never work out so I switched my views to be a DJ.

It was in 2008 where my mom bought me an iOn iCue mixing controller. I was terrible, but I loved it, and I forced my family and friends to listen to all the mixes I ever made.

Through YouTube tutorials of DJ Angelo and excessive “DJ Hero” I started to get pretty good at being a DJ. I started doing school dances, weddings, and even clubs for some time. Through hosting Open Mic events, and Hip-Hop nights my hunger to be a rapper grew and grew. I spent an excessive amount of time writing raps and working on my delivery that I was simply waiting for the opportunity to create my first rap song. It wasn’t until 2016 where I got a work friend who had a studio and invited me to lay down a record. His feedback was simple yet effective “This is dope, you don’t sound corny.” From there I gained the confidence to finish three projects that are available on soundcloud.com/solow32

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The main struggle I faced was my confidence. I’ve had a slight lisp that would get pointed out by various people throughout schooling and even my sister early on said I should stick to Djing (Shes a hater though haha). I am also my worst critic (as all artists are) and I spent a lot of time re-recording my tracks to the point that I don’t even want to release them because the excitement of the song isn’t there since all I can hear is the mistakes.

Please tell us about your business.
So my business is my brand- I am an Actor turned DJ turned Rapper that looks to provide an authentic listening experience that leaves each listener with a piece of me. I am most proud of my team around me that believes in my vision as much as I do. I am not afraid to explore my creative mind, and I seek to challenge myself with every track. What sets me apart is that I know that success is never instant and that even the “Overnight success” stories have a prologue of struggle, ambition, and dedication.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as structured measurable, attainable, realistic and time-oriented goals that are reached via dedication and consistency.
