Meet Jenny Farwell of Snapdragon Salon in Central Phoenix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Farwell.

Jenny, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I had been in the beverage industry (started in marketing, ended in sales) for 12 years when I decided to go cosmetology school. I was 30 years old and entering into an industry where most students were just out of high school. I had wanted to change career for some time and I was fortunate to have had a stylist who encouraged me and eventually became my mentor.

After earning my license, I assisted my hairdresser for about two years. I loved her style and approach, I chose to assist her because I wanted what she had, she created beautiful hair and had full books! With my past training experience, I helped extract and document her cuts and colors to then train other stylists. Together, we created her first education program. Over the next five years, I really dove into the craft of hairdressing. I not only attended countless classes but I began teaching what I had learned and this was a huge shift for my skillset and career! I am going into my 11th year at the same location, Snapdragon Salon. I have been behind the chair as the Director of Education for the past six years and am currently moving into the role of Salon Manager. I specialize in natural-looking, beautiful color that is low maintenance, dry cutting, carving curly and textured hair and extensions. I work with an incredible team of stylists and our front desk team is the best! I really enjoy people, helping people achieve their best while at work and people looking/feeling their best in my chair. I am a co-founder of my latest project, GENUS which is next gen education for hairdressers. We are wrapping up our approach to cutting curly and textured hair. A lot of salons and independent stylists are in need of foundational information to help add these services with confidence and ability. GENUS will provide a series of foundational approaches, theory and technique, all inspired by what has made us successful behind the chair all these years!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I really had to put the time in, people assume you’re just good at being a stylist. It takes years of doing hair over and over again. To be a career hairdresser, one must be committed to this process. There is no short cut!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Snapdragon Salon story. Tell us more about the business.
Snapdragon Salon is a hair salon providing cut, color, smoothing treatments and extensions. I have been behind the chair as the Director of Education for the past six years and am currently moving into a new role as Salon Manager. This will allow me to support our stylists while on the floor along with coaching and individually helping meet goals both personally and professionally. When behind the chair, I specialize in natural-looking, beautiful color that is low maintenance, dry cutting, carving curly and textured hair and customized extensions! I would say I am known for color corrections, extensions and curly cuts. I am most proud of our team and the people that make up Snapdragon. Your people are everything, our team cares about service, integrity and of course beautiful hair. It is becoming more and more rare to find a commission salon that offers the support and education that we do!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I would say timing has been huge. When everything lined up for me being able to go to Cosmetology school, my hairdresser had moved from renting a small room to opening her first salon with multiple chairs. The timing turned out to where she could hire me for a few things needed while I was in school and I was her first true assistant. She was able to show me techniques and helped launch my career unlike any other stylist that she had worked with in the past! I have learned to be patient because if it’s not the right time a lot of wasted energy and resources can occur!
