Meet Slaven Gujic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Slaven Gujic.

Slaven, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I got my start in the creative industry in 2010 when as a student at ASU. I received my first camera as a birthday gift. I did not know what to do with it, so I began tagging along with my coworker who was enrolled in a film program. I assisted him on a few shoots and from then on, I was a sponge. While on set I picked up as much knowledge as possible. I spent the next few years exploring most of Arizona and capturing the landscape, time lapses and learned by trial and error.

Once I became comfortable, I began shooting for various regional MMA Promotions ranging from Rage in the Cage, All Powers Combat up to Bellator, Strikeforce and a UFC Event. The thing about these events is there isn’t any money to be made so I looked for a new opportunity. I went back to film school for a year and during my second semester, I stumbled upon a flyer advertising for an internship opportunity with the City of Mesa. I applied and worked as a joint intern between the Mesa Arts Center and Visit Mesa. I helped produce photo and video content for the city’s visitors bureau and was able to capture event content for the Arts Center. Along the way, I have met a handful of individuals who I consider to be professional mentors, they have been instrumental in my business success.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Anyone who is a small business owner can tell you the road is full of unexpected turns. I had many sleepless nights after learning that a contract I was bidding on had been canceled or when a client decided to go with the cheaper option. In the end, it’s all a part of the business and you have to plan for the unexpected. Failure is part of the learning process so you can either give up or keep on going it’s your choice.

Tell us more about the business.
Slaven Gujic Creative ( Soon to be Urban House Creative) is a creative media company specializing in photo, video and creative marketing. Our clientele can range from local Convention Visitor Bureaus, Ad Agencies, Non-Profits and an assortment of small and large businesses. Each client has different needs so as a result, I work closely with each client to develop the best creative concept for their projects. No matter who the client is I make sure to always go above and beyond to make sure their creative needs are met.

I stay on top of current marketing trends and my specialty would have to be my hybrid workflow. I can pick up a stills camera and within minutes you will see me running around with a cinema camera capturing additional content. What sets me apart from the rest would be my personality and my unwavering passion for creative media. Sometimes this passion can result in accidentally running a triathlon or half marathon while capturing footage, but it’s all good if the footage comes out awesome. I’m not afraid to ask a question and am always willing to share what I learned with others including sharing my past failures.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I have been very lucky to have such a supportive mentor base in the Greater Phoenix area. I have mentors who are involved in various industries. These individuals are the first people I call when I need some sound business advice. They can be supportive and at times dish out some tough love, but I’m always thankful for their opinion.

Their advice has helped my business survive the bad times when I have thought about quitting.
