Today we’d like to introduce you to Sky Black.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sky. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I realized at a young enough age that to be an artist meant to be in love with creating new things. This feeling of limitless potential was the train leaving the station that I couldn’t resist. After passing up a nearly full ride scholarship, I became relentless in learning to paint and accomplish vision. I’ve always been inspired by ironies, juxtapositions and the unexpected. Sometimes when I’m looking for ideas, I start with the question “what is the most unlikely thing that could happen?” and go from there. This leads to a method of discovery within the painting process. I paint large scale murals but mostly oil paintings of a new contemporary surreal style that have been collected internationally. My latest projects have been with The monOrchid Gallery and creative studios located downtown Phoenix on the Roosevelt row arts district and with The Museum at Sky Harbor.
Has it been a smooth road?
A way to measure success is how you’re able to navigate from challenge to challenge without diminished enthusiasm. I’m a “goal oriented” person and have always looked first at what is within my ability to reach the desired outcomes. I’m very thankful to everyone who had ever allowed my art to reach them and especially my collectors who have made it continually possible for me to keep creating.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I’m very excited to be part of the Phoenix art scene now and am amazed at the progress that the downtown area has made in terms of the saturation of artists, murals and galleries.
