Meet Skai Harbor of Problematik

Today we’d like to introduce you to Skai Harbor.

Skai, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Phoenix, raised all over West Phoenix for the majority of my upbringing. I started writing rhymes/poetry at an early age of five. I began to gravitate towards Hip Hop from what my older brother and my mother would play around the house. In late 2006, I was introduced to an emcee by the name of Bookie, who was building his own independent label, at the time, called Bassman Entertainment. He brought me along to record at his house, where I met his nephew, Dobey Dobe, who is also an artist and we all began to make music and perform at local talent shows & various venues around the valley. After graduating high school, I became an artist under 210West Entertainment based out of Pasadena, CA along with other various talents, and released my first official album titled, ‘Bastard Brother The EP’ in 2016, which is available for purchase on all digital/streaming platforms. I shed light on a range of topics from personal obstacles and experiences to social & political issues keeping the art of lyricism alive in today’s climate of hip hop. I’m currently working on my new album today.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The real struggle is maintaining the inspiration to keep going. Family issues, money issues, childhood friends passing away, all of it is a challenge we face as human beings. The music is the medicine we need to get through it all.

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m a writer. I have written & published my own personal books. I’ve ghostwrote for some artists. I’ve opened up for performances such as Bookie, Dirty Birdy, Ras Kass, and Prozak of Strange Music. I’m also heavily involved in a non-profit organization, Our Black Father’s Committee, which consists of a group of fathers who dedicate their time to provide positive alternatives for young black boys in the community, and founded by Brother Bilal Munir Rahim. Some of these brothers and I have collaborated on several songs, as well.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
So far, my proudest moments have been receiving the moments to showcase what I love to do in front of my community, and my rap peers, especially the ones I look up to telling me I’m on the right path.
