Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherrelle Thompson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When I worked for the state of Arizona in Corrections and then later for Division of Developmental Disabilities I noticed that there was need for mental health services. So I decided to go back to school and get my second Masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. In the beginning of my journey with working as a therapist I originally was going to stay in private practice with an agency. Despite this original plan, I still wanted to make sure I could make an impact in the community and help others so after a discussion with my husband I decided in March of 2024 to open Healing Hearts Behavioral Health PLLC. As I have continued to grow in my practice, I enjoy helping clients who are diagnosed with ADHD, Autism, and are impacted by trauma so I am certified in EMDR.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No the road has not been smooth. There have been times where it has been hard and I had thoughts of quitting especially when I was going through my internship. Going through this journey to become a therapist has required lots of patience with myself. Just like I work with my clients on practicing self-care and coping skills I have had to do the same. Some of the struggles is when the season is a little slow and not as many people are seeking out therapy services. While other times it feels as though for some clients you are not able to make an impact like you were hoping despite the amount of work you are putting in to find the modalities that may be helpful.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Healing Hearts Behavioral Health PLLC?
My name is Sherrelle Thompson and I am licensed Clinical Therapist. I completed my master’s degree at Grand Canyon University, in Mental Health Counseling with a Christian Emphasis. I was previously employed as a Correctional officer and decided to change professions and was working as a Case Manager for the Division of Developmental Disabilities for the past 10 years. Through my employment as a Correctional Officer and Case Manager, I have realized how much of a need there is for mental health services. This is what has led to my decision of creating Healing Hearts Behavioral Health. The Christian emphasis is due to my noticing that many Christians tend not to seek out help because of the stigma associated with getting mental health services. I am hoping that as a Christian Counselor I can help them get the help they are needing.
At Healing Hearts Behavioral Health I am passionate about helping individuals with disabilities, preteens, teens, couples, and anyone who is needing help on their journey to being healed. I have helped others work through Substance abuse, low self-esteem, negative self-image, suicidal behaviors, Anxiety, Depression, and families who are trying to develop the skills needed to help support their loved ones. I have also helped couples either dating or married in redefining their relationships and coming back together as a unit. I am hoping that as a mental health counselor I can help any individual no matter their background. Through plenty of support, empathy, understanding, and uplifting them, each client will be able to not just reach their goals but learn more about themselves along the way. That everyone who I work with can develop their self-love while successfully reaching their goals while in counseling.
Specialties: Polyamory, ADHD, Anger, Autism, Bipolar Disorder, Couples, DBT, EMDR, Family, Grief, LGBTQIA+, Spirituality, and all areas of Trauma. Integrated Ketamine Assisted Therapy in partnership with Redemption Psychiatry. Certified in EMDR through EMDRIA.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
If you are currently in school preparing for your internship and practicum look for a practice that will allow you stay on after those hours are completed. I have learned that there is a vast community available to help you to build the necessary skills to be a good therapist. Sometimes it is right in the office where other times if you end up in a practice where there is not much collaboration you may have to search for it. Also look through the ACA as they have groups that are willing to help therapists with support. I am still working with supervisors as an LAC but in the new year I will be applying for my LPC, and with this I plan to still collaborate with my supervisors even though their role working with me will be changing.
