Meet Shenal Hooks of The Modern Geek Boutique in Central Phoenix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shenal Hooks.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Shenal. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When I was younger, I was shy (still is) and always tried to blend in, look like everyone else, and not be seen. I was struggling inside and didn’t know why. Then one day I decided to wear something “different” and guess what happened… Nothing. At. All. So I began to let my clothing and sense of style speak for me until I was able to find my voice. Fashion brought me make to life.

I began modeling, meeting local artists and fashion designers. I wanted to contribute to the community in a positive yet non-conventional way. So I decided to create the Modern Geek Boutique.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The whole process has been a learning experience. I’ve learned that if you dont try then you will never know whether or not it will work out or you. So I’ve experienced my fair share of “failures” but its really not considered a failure until you give up and I dont plan on doing that. One thing that I’m constantly working on is trying to find my “tribe”; getting my products out there to the people who appreciate them the most. I’ll still learning things like advertising and SEO.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We strive to provide positive apparel for fellow Introverts, Nerds, Geeks, who can relate to the struggles of being seen as different, odd, uncool or “too quiet”.

Our designs promote positive self-love for those who can relate to the geek or nerd life. Designs are inspired by cosplay, comic books, sci-fi, 80’s nostalgic movies, and all things geeky.

It’s kind of funny… Nerd, geek, bookworm, whatever they use to call us, was not always the cool thing to be.

But we want to help change that. Books, comics, sci-fi, space exploration, cosplay, are now everything and we are the trendsetters. The Modern Geek Boutique strives to design positive apparel for geeks with style.

What were you like growing up?
I was very quiet, awkward, and known to be a “good girl”. I got straight A’s and B’s. I loved to collect rocks (still do) and took photography classes. While growing up and learning to get out of my shell, I developed love for dancing, sewing, fashion, DIY’s, painting, and costume design.
