Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelley Treadaway.
Shelley, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started freelance writing about eight years ago. I have always loved writing creatively and found that not only was writing for other companies easy for me to do, it was feeding my passion which, for me, creates a very high-quality end result for the customer. Quite organically I started moving into writing blogs for businesses, then social media posts, then Facebook ads and so on.
I realized that my extensive background in writing was a huge asset to internet marketing and I began exploring the digital/internet marketing side of the business. In the process, I helped edit a book, create digital materials for the launch, created a Facebook community for environmentalists looking to change the way restaurants use single-use plastic, took on client after client all while continuing to write and create blogs, websites, and content for anyone and everyone who needed it.
I felt burned out. I needed help. At some point, I started to bring on writers for my business as freelancers themselves. I figured out a system to feed work to talented writers while creating passive income for myself doing their lead generation and continuing to bring on more clients to the digital marketing sector which is where I am today!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The freelance road isn’t always a smooth one and I am still continuing to learn lessons the hard way, like making sure clients pay upfront after a rough patch where I was out almost $400 from a website developer who took my content and never contacted me for payment. I also am a Mom to two young boys, a wife, involved in coaching a leadership program in Phoenix all while attempting to have a social life!
One struggle, in particular, was finding a way to balance it all! How can I be an amazing Mom, wife, and friend while also balancing a growing business that needs A LOT of my time. Afterall, The Creative Scoop is still young! We aren’t even two years old yet! It’s kind of like having an infant that needs all of your time and care while life is happening around you simultaneously. I had to make a very conscious effort to time block, reduce time wasters like social media and focus in on projects that bring me joy vs. feed a small game mentality.
Thankfully I have amazing mentors, highly successful friends who understand the freelance/working Mom life and a very supportive family who love me no matter how I show up. I do my best to learn from my mistakes with grace instead of holding hostility and resentment toward those who may try and take advantage of a beginner. All in all, the obstacles and challenges are worth it because I absolutely LOVE when a company gives me positive feedback or a client sells more inventory than ever before.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Creative Scoop story. Tell us more about the business.
The Creative Scoop is my company and we specialize in freelance writing services and digital marketing services. I work with large and small businesses creating web visibility, enhancing and expanding brands, business or expand an individual presence on social media. We also create marketing campaigns, blogs, and websites for companies all over the world! We are known for taking a win-win approach to all of our business relationships! There is nothing more fulfilling than to bring on clients that I consciously align with; I believe it is so important!
I am incredibly proud of the growth we have experienced in the last six months. I don’t invest in any advertisement at the moment because of our word of mouth success, B2B referral strategy works best for bringing on new clients. I am a woman who loves getting into a relationship with my clients. I want to make sure that they are getting the very best return for their money while enjoying the duration of our working relationship as well.
Helen Hain, a woman I greatly admire has a motto of always leaving a place better than she found it. I like to take the same approach to the business relationships I nourish and grow. I genuinely want to help people figure out what works with marketing and writing for their businesses and I take pride in providing high-quality, profit-driven results for companies, brands, and individuals of all backgrounds and niches.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Ah, the role of luck. I asked my Dad who is an idol of mine, what he believes the secret to success is. One aspect he touched on was being in the right place at the right time. I am a huge proponent of that!
I was a single Mom when I first started writing. I didn’t have my company established yet and was just making money doing something I was good at. As luck would have it, I was in the right place at the right time to land a huge client who ended up funding a lot of the work I had moving forward. Again, I was lucky when I married my husband was, at the time, developing websites and taught me how to do keyword research, SEO keyword integration and more.
I continue to believe that all of the activities I described earlier (Mom, wife, personal growth participant, networking, etc) are all effective ways to increase my surface area. The more I show up outward focused and with a giving mentality, the more people want to work with me.
The more they want to work with me, the more positive results I create. The more profit-driven results I create the easier it is for me to land a 5-star review and be a referral to the next client. It is truly a ripple effect that continues to grow the more hard work I put in and the more surface area I create for myself as well.
