Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharzad Green.
Sharzad, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Before graduating from the University of Arizona, College of Pharmacy in 1990, I was given the best career advice. It went like this: “If you find yourself celebrating weekends and dreading Mondays, quit your job and move on to what sparkles your passion”. After finishing my doctor of pharmacy degree, I worked as a pharmacist in several different settings. I loved interacting with the patient in the retail chain setting but there was hardly enough time to counsel my patients as I really wanted to.
Working as a home health and nursing home pharmacist was wonderful too. It allowed me to utilize my knowledge of calculating dosages and monitoring drug therapies. I offered pain management to those who were in desperate need, especially hospice patients and collaborated with other medical professionals taking care of our patients. Along the way, I met one of the most caring pharmacists who inspired me to become a “compounding pharmacist”. I observed his caring approach while he discussed his patients’ needs with them and with their doctors. He would then try to come up with solutions through compounding medications that were not commercially available. That was it!
I loved coming up with individualized solutions through compounding. As a woman, I had the passion in me to help others (especially other women) to feel their best by balancing their hormones. I have been a compounding pharmacist specializing in bio-identical, natural hormone replacement therapy, menopause, andropause (male menopause), adrenal fatigue syndrome and much more for 20 years. I look forward to doing what I love to do every day of the week, especially on Mondays!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Initially, not too many doctors and health care providers were familiar with compounding and making individual medications and dosage forms from scratch. It took a few years and lots of effort from compounding pharmacists, as well as the media to introduce the concept to providers. But the most important force behind compounding and bio-identical hormone therapy was the ever-expanding group of patients who demanded alternatives to what they were given.
Community Clinical Pharmacy – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My main office is at Community Clinical Pharmacy (CCP) in Mesa, Arizona where I see patients by appointment. Each hormone consultation is an hour long and during that time I discuss the individual’s past medical history, family history, risk factors for developing different disease, symptoms and lab results.
I also review supplements and offer non-hormonal suggestions to help manage symptoms or medical conditions. After the consultation, I fax my recommendations (mostly natural, bio-identical hormones) to the doctor or medical provider and await their approval for prescriptions that I have recommended. Once approved, our state of the art compounding lab (located inside CCP) compounds the prescriptions.
My patients are instructed to contact me 3 weeks after starting the regimen to discuss improvements and possible concerns or side effects. I take pride in taking care of each patient individually and utilizing both western and eastern medicine in doing so. In my opinion, when it comes to medical conditions and treatments, one size does not fit all. I make every effort to educate the public and make myself available to answer my patient’s questions. In addition to Community Clinical Pharmacy, I also provide consultations for Acacia Apothecary and Wellness Center in Tucson.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I see contentment as success. Professionally speaking, I view success as taking care of my patients to the best of my ability. That brings me endless content. I believe that if something is worth doing, it is worth doing well.
