Meet Shannon Proffer of Clayton Nash Real Estate in Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Proffer.

Shannon, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have ALWAYS been infatuated with real estate. Growing up, my parents loved to drive around new neighborhoods and check out homes, in town and while on vacation. I loved it too. Something about helping people find their dream home is so heartwarming and I knew I wanted it to be a part of my everyday work. I moved to Arizona right after graduating from high school in Michigan. I then started going to college and working in sales at the Village Health Clubs, later to jump into real estate school. A local agent expressed to me that she was looking into starting a team and asked if I’d be interested in joining. That’s where it all began!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Like anything, nothing comes easy. If it does, it means you aren’t truly growing. My real estate career has been a rollercoaster, but a very exciting rollercoaster! I love every minute of it- even when obstacles pop up. I look at everything as a learning experience. Something I may have messed up with, I then know to not do that again and which route to take. I think the most difficult thing initially is learning the real estate normalities. As soon as you get out of real estate school, you’re fresh from the books and are ready to let someone know how many feet are in an acre. The reality is, you don’t really use much of those facts you were taught to memorize. For me anyways, I had this idea that I’d have a teacher ready to instruct me how to do everything for my first deals, but that was so not the case. It’s a quite competitive and fast moving industry, so there aren’t many out there to hold your hand. This, though, only makes you stronger and every mistake counts more. A few years later, my business is successful as ever and I am so proud of what it has become.

Please tell us about Clayton Nash Real Estate.
What makes my job so much fun is the diversity. For example, I’ve had a $125,000 listing and I’ve had a $2,500,000 listing. I’ve helped a 20-year-old first time home buyer and I’ve helped an 80-year-old buyer who has purchased over 15 different properties over their lifetime. I’ve sold homes all over the valley, even a few down in Tucson as well. From this, I think I set myself apart from other agents because of my knowledge of different areas. I take pride in adapting very well to my client’s personalities and fulfill all of their needs as their Realtor. I love people and I love seeing the smile on their face when I can hand over the keys to their brand-new home. That’s what makes all of the hard work throughout the journey worth it.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I probably wouldn’t have looked down so much on rental transactions. In the beginning, those were the only leads that I had and I was bummed I wasn’t making much money from them while starting a new career from ground zero. Rentals require almost the same amount of work as a full on purchase, but for a fraction of the pay, unfortunately. At first it was a little discouraging putting so much effort forth for such a small return, but what I’ve learned over time is that rentals are actually secret gems! A lot of those clients were moving here from out of state and wanted to “test” the area out first. After a year, suddenly, they were ready to buy . . . And guess who they called. Also, I’ve received many referrals from these clients which has been amazing! Moral of the story is, you always have to start at the bottom of the ladder and work your way up. The lessons I learned with these transactions gave me great practice for some of my bigger deals now and I am so thankful for that. I’ll never turn a rental down now!
