Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Phillips.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My main message in all of my art is self-love.
My unique story is my journey to find self-love. Life is harder when you don’t love yourself. It’s best to understand every part of you… flaws and all.
I have many talents so I’ve always found myself in various artistic roles. Some causing for vast amount of public attention. When I first started creating I didn’t have a grasp on who Shannon was and why I was creating. Causing me to loose inspiration in some fields.
That loss of inspiration was a major hit to my “Who am I” venture. I started meditating more and dissecting myself, until I felt I was ready. Now I’m firm in my art and myself. I know who I am and I’m comfortable with every part of me. If you are not kind to yourself you won’t be kind to others.
Dance, photography, poetry, and modeling is my expression. I hold them close to my heart and they’ve become part of me. These art forms help carry me through this journey. I guess my art has been my medicine too. Helping me come to the light with every endeavor.
Please tell us about your art.
I dabble in a lot of art forms.
DANCE:
Dance is my first love. When I’m creating choreography my inspiration always stems from self-love and motivation. Once I have a solid idea I usually dream vividly about the dance. When I wake, I try to jot down my dreams. From here I create in the studio. I’m into numerology & symbolism so the amount of dancers I have, the repetition we do, and the shapes we make all have a message in them. Afro-modern is my go to style. A mix of African dance and Modern dance. One of my take aways from African dance is the love we carry for the earth and our bodies. It’s spiritual.
Photography + Content Creator:
I create artistic visuals and photos. Sometimes I take solo shots, other times with groups of people. I pick a theme for the photoshoot or series and go from there. Based off the theme I style clothing, create makeup looks, and choose a venue or unique space. About 60% of the content on my social media pages I create. I value collaboration so I make sure to collaborate. I also have the honor of being an Instagram influencer, meaning brands send me products to try in exchange for a review! Influencers are known for the unique content they create :).
Modeling:
A lot of people don’t think this is an art form. Confuses me. We embody a designer’s idea and vision for a garment. We bring pieces to life. We give a garment purpose and we still these visions and ideas. Literally we still time to give off a mood. How inspiring to bring someone’s vision to life? Can you see the beauty in that?
My message is to live your best life… to learn every part of you and then be the best version of you. I hope people see my determination and understand they can have anything. With a little knowledge and hard work you can have it all.
You should know my art is bold, colorful, spiritual, and fulfilling.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
Our roles have never changed. We are here to remind souls of everything beautiful and to use our art to help others. Art is an escape, if only for a moment.
When world disasters happen people look and CLING to art. They look to artist for their knowledge, opinions, craft, and spirits. They expect us to have the key to help or have an opinion.
Local and national or international events and issues affect my art to the max. With my art I aim to educate and inspire. Most times I am directly affected by the world around me and I respond. If there’s a worldwide problem, I feel that… If my friend has a bad day, I feel that. It’s impossible for me to not read energies and be affected by it. I love people too much. So people and issues do directly affect me.
