Meet Shannon Penn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Penn.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born Shannon Penn; yet I go by PENN. I wanted to make sure I stay close to my roots, (goal is to grow, but never change who I am. PENN! I am motivated to never run out of ink – keep making steps towards progress leaving work of gratitude that remains permanent like an ink pen. I refer to myself as a storytelling/melodic performer and inspired lyricist gifted with a passionate delivery. I am from the Inner city raised in South Central (Crenshaw, Los Angeles). Thus far in my career, I am a local award-winning artist and CEO of PEER PASSION ENTERTAINMENT. I like to say my passion for creating music, performing, and inspiring others to want more is how I keep focus and keep moving. Music is my way out of struggle and poverty. I am an indie artist/ self-made and plan to remain solo until that life-changing moment occurs. Why music? It wasn’t until after graduating receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Communications from San Jose State University, I found myself and sound late 2017. In 2018, I started making noise as a music artist. I gained much momentum on Instagram (@thatboipenn) after releasing hit song “HELL YEAH” pairing a grade A+ music video on YouTube (PEER PASSION ENTERTAINMENT) to bring life to my single.

Following “HELL YEAH” hit single, I released “ALL I WANT & BLESS SOME ONE” on sound cloud (PEER PASSION ENTERTAINMENT). In 2018 alone, success started to look bright following some hardships and setbacks. After being homeless twice in 2 years, car repossessed, loss of family members to illness and cancer, sleeping in the car, working 2-3 jobs in one day, and being fired from Shoe Palace for shooting “HELL YEAH” music video in the store location, my passion became purer; I decided to make music first priority. In the midst of struggle, I was able to stay focused and invest in my dream. “PPE” is short for PEER PASSION ENTERTAINMENT. This is my brand, lifestyle, and music label. In the month of April 2018, I was crowned Coast2CoastLive Bay Area Edition 1stplace winner, SHOWCASETOUR 1st place winner in LA, and SHOWCASETOUR 2nd place winner in Oakland. Winning these shows gave me confidence to pursue my dream as a music artist and put on for “P.P.E”

I am a writer, performer, and my work ethic is undeniable. I feel I have the perfect personality for show business and entertainment. My future goal is to partner with an organization that will respect and accept “PENN” as an artist. As I continue to grow a following on social media platforms and book shows, I look forward to creating more music and seeking avenues to become an inspiration to millions of people on a larger platform.

Please tell us about your art.
Music is good when fans can relate. I make music that is relatable. I put my whole self into my lyrics to create a complete song and concept. My songs are full of passion, pain, struggle, wishes, and reality. I look forward to expressing my true feelings, thoughts, experiences from my past whether good or bad. I say my writing style and process is drawn from the thrill of storytelling. With my art, I paint a picture for my fans (support squad) and listeners. I’m a versatile artist however, my main catalog of songs will be heartfelt similar to Nipsey Hussle and Meek Mill sound.

I first find a beat, vibe to the beat for the first minute than I start it over. From that moment I know if the beat and my soul (inner artist) has a connection. If the beat and I connect well you can count me in to have a fire hook(chorus) in less than minutes. After I have a hook, it is all she wrote from that moment going forward. You can bet I write songs in one sit down. Depending on the beat determines how I write a song. I never know before hearing a beat if I will sing or rap. I do not even know what I want to express or talk about until I feel the beat. The beat has a way of drawing me in, I enter into another world, and I go with whatever my hearts chooses to say.

I am thankful that God has given me the ability to inspire others through my music. The goal when creating music is to uplift and encourage progress in others life. When fans hear my music I want them to love self, see growth, overcome any self-demons, and put them self on. I like to say I am the type of artist that create music people can ride and party to; yet be empowered and positively influenced to rise above yesterday’s person.

Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
My favorite rapper is Nipsey Hussle.

It is not a day that goes by where I am not seeking ways or new opportunities to be more self-driven and determined like Nipsey.

I am inspired by Nipsey knowledge, his personality, music, interviews, and the way he humbles himself although he is the rap GOD.

I have met plenty of music artist in person. Most of the advice I have received is… “It takes one song/hit to blow up”.
