Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaheen Siddiqui.
Shaheen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been a physical therapist for 15 years, and for the first 13 years of my career I have always worked in a typical outpatient therapy setting, which I truly did enjoy. It was exciting, I and I learned so much from the various types of patients I was able to work with. However, there was something that didn’t quite feel right, as I felt that my time with each patient was so rushed, because I was seeing 3-4 patients per hour. I felt that there had to be a better way to provide physical therapy, so that my patients could get more out of each session.
Fast forward to mid-2016…While working out with my friend and trainer, Julie Peake, she mentioned that she was expanding the space in her studio to accommodate more services. She asked me if I would consider starting a practice inside the studio….and after much thought and deliberation, I took the plunge! This is EXACTLY what I had been wanting to do for so long, but didn’t realize it until the opportunity presented itself. The idea was that I would only treat one patient per hour, and provide very personalized care for each person. No more running around from one patient to the next, only spending 10-15 minutes with each one. Now, I had the opportunity to really make a difference in my patients’ lives, and give them the care that they deserve.
It’s been a year and a half since I started my practice, and I am SO grateful for this journey. I have learned so much, connected with the most amazing people, and I am truly doing what I love to do….which is to help people get back to what they want to be doing, in a natural, medicine free way!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The main struggle for me as a new entrepreneur is figuring out a good work/life balance. (If that exists!?) As a mom of four, my main priority is making sure I have quality time with my kiddos and hubby. Especially in the first year, I found myself struggling with this, but I am learning to become better at time blocking, and doing my best not to bring my work home.
The other challenge as a new business owner is figuring out what works as far as marketing and getting the word out about how I can help people, and the value that physical therapy can provide. Nowadays, people have so many options as to where they can receive physical therapy, and it can become confusing to the potential patient. But, I am so grateful to have the support and insight of some amazing business coaches and mentors that have really helped me along the way. I’m still learning everyday!
Please tell us about Crossroads Orthopedic Physical Therapy.
I help people that are limited by some type of pain or injury – whether it’s acute or chronic, or post-surgery – get back to the activities they want to be doing, without harmful medications or injections. I also help people prevent pain before it even starts, by teaching those things they can do in their daily life, such as the correct way to set up the workspace or the correct lifting techniques, for example.
The key is to help people get to the root cause of what’s really causing their pain, and this is done with a thorough assessment of that person’s movements and other tests. Then, once the cause is determined, the sessions consist of a combination of hands on, manual techniques and a tailored exercise program for each patient. I also offer dry needling, which is the use of fine needles to help alleviate muscle tension and decrease pain.
What sets me apart from other physical therapy clinics is that I provide one on one treatment, only seeing one patient per hour. There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to PT, so it’s really important to have the time with each person to truly tailor a program just for them. This allows me to give each patient undivided attention, and it helps them make more significant improvements in each visit.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I think the biggest lesson learned is not to spread myself too thin, and take on too much at one time. There are so many people and age ranges that can benefit from physical therapy, so initially I felt like I had to be everywhere and market to everyone. However, I’ve realized it’s very important to focus in on the demographic I’m trying to reach. So, the main lesson learned is to stay focused!
