Today we’d like to introduce you to Seth Garsha.
Seth, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I worked in corporate retail since graduating from Indiana University. I really enjoyed it, but came to a point in my career where I would need to move to New York or travel 70% of the time to continue to grow. As a father of three young kids, those options did not appeal to me so I started to investigate into franchising.
I met with a franchise consultant for hours so he could understand my interests and what I was looking for in a business. Eventually, I narrowed my options down to Diesel Barbershop. I was drawn to Diesel Barbershop because of the core values I experienced first hand when I visited a few stores in San Antonio, TX. The level of customer service was top notch. Everyone was courteous, respectful, and focused on providing every customer with a stress-free and relaxing atmosphere. Additionally, they had everything I look for when I get my hair cut in the signature “Diesel Plus” (haircut, neck shave, shampoo, scalp massage, hot towel face treatment, and shoulder massage). I love the lively environment with cool posters throughout, great music playing, free arcade games, and complimentary drinks.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Since this was a totally new endeavor for me, there have definitely been some challenges along the way. The Diesel team told me from the beginning it would take 9-12 months to open. I thought they were nuts. How hard could it be to find some real estate, get some building plans, permits, hire a contractor, build a 1300 square foot barbershop, and hire a couple of quality cutters?
Sure enough, they were right and it took me ten months to open once I started looking for real estate. As challenging as the process was along the way, I learned so many things about commercial real estate and construction that I really enjoyed. I think it will only help me in the future if I am lucky enough to open more stores.
Now that we have been open for five months, my biggest challenge is understanding marketing and driving traffic to the shop, especially through the internet. I want to make sure we are at the top of searches and getting positive reviews across all platforms.
Please tell us about Diesel Barbershop.
Diesel Barbershop was founded in 2011 by Shayne Brown. He had a vision of a dream barbershop that did not exist anywhere, so he decided to build it himself. An updated version of the corner barbershop that appeals to what today’s men and boys want in a haircut experience. Welcome to Diesel Barbershop, the result of a 20 plus year journey that included feathered hair, mullets, goatees and faux-hawks. The look and feel of Diesel Barbershop is part barbershop, part salon, part old school record store, part mechanics garage, part tattoo shop, and part vintage arcade. A man-cave for great haircuts and an amazing overall haircut experience that is free of gossip and drama.
Our goal is to provide an exceptional, reliable, and relaxing haircut experience in an edgy, 21st-century version of the old corner barbershop, where men can be themselves. You can enjoy services like the signature “Diesel Plus” (haircut, neck shave, shampoo, scalp massage, hot towel face treatment, and shoulder massage) and also watch movies or sports on TV, play video games, and listen to your favorite tunes..

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Coming from Chicago, my favorite thing about living in Phoenix area is definitely the winter. It’s around 70 degrees, I do not have to shovel snow, and there is no humidity. If I do want to enjoy the snow, it is a quick drive up to Flagstaff.
The thing I like least about Phoenix are snakes. Every time I hear a bush shake, it startles me. I am not sure I will ever get over it. The other day I was out for a run and a bunny jumped out of a bush in front of me. It was one of the scariest moments of my life when I heard the bush shake and saw an animal dart out.
