Meet Courtney and Sebastian Martin of ColorBox Entertainment in Chandler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney and Sebastian Martin.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Courtney and Sebastian. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
People often ask, “How long have I been drawing?” I simply respond with, “I was the child that never stopped drawing.” My parents have always been supportive of my creative side and I never really gave much thought about making a career out of drawing all I knew was that I loved Art. It became tough once I graduated high school and went out on my own because I became discouraged as a young artist and I began to hear people tell me that it would be tough to make a living and would question my path as an artist. Eventually, I had a job washing cars at a dealership. My dreams of being an artist diminished. Till one day, I drew a parody of a fellow coworker and once everyone saw it, the drawing got compliments and laughs. There was once again an excitement about picking up my sketchbook. One question that still sticks with me came from a fellow coworker at the time; “What are you doing here washing cars?” Everyday after work I’d spend hour after hour learning to draw Caricatures. I eventually went back to school to study art, graduated and landed my first job as a cartoonist for the college newspaper. I then, became a full time artist working for a company as their illustrator but I still had a passion to go out and develop my own style. That is when I started ColorBox Entertainment in 2017. And in the same year, I was then awarded “Top Ten Caricature Artist of the Year” by the International Society of Caricature Artists and won other numerous awards for the caricature arts. I now work out of my studio in Chandler, Arizona as an illustrator of my own business.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
One of the biggest obstacles I faced were the negative feedback from coworkers, teachers and acquaintances when I told them the field of work I wanted to go into. Most nay-sayers will put you down and tell you it’s impossible and you might not succeed. I stopped listening to the negativity and did my own thing anyway. Another struggle I had along the way was with myself. I was always the runt in school, never had a prom date and by nature, I was the socially awkward kid. So, I was bankrupt of self-confidence. Eventually, these things I would overcome with my faith and realizing I was fearfully and wonderfully from God. It gave me the ability to say “I can do this” and with that in mind, nothing else mattered only my dreams.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My wife, Courtney, who accompanies me at most events and who is the brains behind the scenes, is working with me to soon provide classes for adults and children with a fun approach into art. Many children’s books, adult fables, and graphic novels are in the works and hopefully released in the near future!
