Meet Sean Whiteman of Interchange Audio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Whiteman.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
While I was in college I decided to take a few audio classes as electives, and they quickly became my favorite classes. I had been playing in local bands for a while but saw this as an opportunity to interact with the writing process in ways I had never been able to do before. After working on a folding table in my bedroom for 2 years mostly conducting trial and error experiments (that were not going well) to try to learn how to mix a song properly. While in one of my bands we were able to put the budget together to hire Matt Good, guitarist/singer in From First To Last (Skrillex’s band) to record our ep.

After helping with the writing process and track my drums Matt asked me if I’d come in the following week to help him write a couple songs for a metal vocalist that hired him to write music for him with the hope to recruit members. During this process, I gathered the confidence to ask Matt if I could intern for him, and to my surprise, he said yes. For the next year, I soaked up as much knowledge as possible. When my internship was done I opened my own studio near downtown Mesa in a complex where bands and engineers could rent out rooms.

After two years of recording there I was lucky enough to rent a house with a guest house in the backyard. The only problem was this room was completely gutted with concrete floors, dirty walls, and no air conditioning (which is a huge problem in Arizona). So, with the help of a few friends and a contractor to put up some walls we were able to transform it into a very comfortable studio environment. I’ve now been here for a couple of years and couldn’t be happier.

I one day hope to record every artist in Arizona and share in making their songs the best they can possibly be. I always strive to make every song sound as amazing as it should, and appreciate all the artists I’ve worked with other the past years and look forward to all future artists.

Has it been a smooth road?
I would say no. It’s mainly because this industry (like most) is extremely competitive. Also, a recording studio is a very expensive thing to invest in. On top of everything, though. I’m never done trying to achieve the best recordings possible. I’m always learning and getting better every day.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Interchange Audio – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are a recording studio. We take pride in producing the artists we work with to create the best product possible. We want our artists to feel taken care of. We don’t want any them to stress at any point.

Their job is to do what they do best and have fun to play music. It’s my job to take the weight of the product and polish it. Our will and determination sets us apart. You won’t see this kind of motivation in any other studio

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Mesa is beautiful as long as you stay inside during the summer haha!
