Meet Sean Mullaney and Alexandra Ncube of Soulstice Sound in Central

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Mullaney and Alexandra Ncube.

Sean and Alexandra, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We met at a callback for the musical, Spring Awakening, at The Phoenix Theatre Company in 2012, and began dating soon after. Little did we know that the relationship that we were creating would lead to not only a happy romantic partnership, but also a wonderful music partnership as well. Both of us may have our roots in the theatre but have been playing instruments since we were teenagers. We both joined the local event band, The Instant Classics, and performed hundreds of shows with them until Alexandra had the opportunity to tour professionally with The Book of Mormon, as the female lead, Nabalungi. She eventually transferred to the West End after the 1st national tour closed.

During this time, Sean had accompanied her on the journey and played his original music in venues across the world as well as performing as Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar in London. While living abroad, we were fortunate enough to welcome the news of an amazing child into our lives, our daughter, Nova. She would act as the catalyst for our move back to Phoenix, where we both grew up and have a family. We soon thereafter decided to form our duo project, Soulstice Sound. So in 2018, with Sean on guitar and vocals, and Alexandra on keys, vocals, and percussion, Soulstice Sound took flight. We have since performed all over Phoenix and can’t wait to continue to pursue our passions with all of the good people here in the Valley.

Has it been a smooth road?
We can honestly say that the road each of us has taken has been different but difficult in its own way. A lot of rejection comes before the successes and without those hardships, we wouldn’t be where we are today. For example, Alexandra was rejected from ASU’s Musical Theatre program as an incoming Freshman and instead went on to graduate from the theatre department. Of course, she grew from that and overcame various other rejections early on before hitting her stride after college. Sean was born with limited hearing and still developed a strong ear for music, even teaching himself how to play guitar at a young age. The best thing we can say is that since meeting each other, the road has been easier to navigate because we both have grown together on this path.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
We are a music duo that performs songs from as far back as the 50s to today. Our intentions at every show are to connect with the crowd with intimate interpretations of hit songs and our personal story along the way. We separate ourselves from the crowd by just being our authentic selves at our performances because frankly, everyone else was already taken.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Hopefully, people remain interested in live music and music continues to be made. It is up to us to keep providing the option!
