Meet Sean McMahon of S&K Oil Sales in Northern Phoenix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean McMahon.

Sean, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Let’s start at the very beginning of my life. I was born to a hard-working and compassionate family who just moved from the eastern coast to start a new chapter in Arizona. As I can recall from my parents’ telling of my early childhood, I was developing as a normal child until ten months old, that’s when life had taken an unexpected turn. My parents thought it was bizarre that I wasn’t progressing like a normal child. So, they decided to take me into Children’s Phoenix Hospital to find out the root cause of this abnormality. That’s when my parents discovered that I diagnosed with Autism based on the tests that the doctor has used on me. The response from the doctor was that “By the age of 12 years old, I would be secluded to a mental institute.” Once we heard the results, they were in deep sadness and confusion. They were afraid that their own child will be put into a mental institution before he gets the chance to live a normal and happy life. So, they were faced with two doors. Door number one will be to accept this fate or door number two put up me at a foster home. But they chose door number three despite the doctors’ word. They decided to put me through a rigorous amount of therapies that help with my speech pattern and motor skills. All this ten-year journey has helped me to become the self-made man that I am today. My accomplishments include graduating from Horizon High School with a 3.25 GPA, made semifinals at ASU expository speaking event during my senior year, I am politically involved with the Arizona Republican Party, and currently holding the position of ZECO ECO specialist.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The journey on this road had a lot of bumps, but I view these bumps as challenges to better myself as a person. Since it is important for anyone to embrace the unexpected troubles that life throws at us every day. In my case, it would my greatest challenge would be to adapt to different situations that don’t fit into a routine. For example, I used to be highly sensitive to loud noises when I was a child. I couldn’t stand the sounds of the grocery store or go into the movies (which I ended become an avid moviegoer later into my teen years). Thankfully, thanks to the help of therapies and encouragement from my parents, I was able to overcome this obstacle.

Now, I am currently facing the dilemma of using my practical intelligence in order to work on the ZECO machines. I never went to trade school to learn the uses of hand tools required at my job. I just finished my two-year degree in business, and I thought I was going to work in the administrative part of the business. Instead, I was thrown into a career path that I never considered doing. So basically, I had to retrain my mind into using emotional intelligence along with practical smarts to complete a machine in a timely manner. By doing this job, it has taught me a lot about the importance of keeping a cool mind and solve complex problems without instructions from my boss. As of a result, I have gotten pretty good at it and I started to enjoy doing this job. Not only this job has made become a better problem solver and student, but I have also become a more self-efficient and happier person in general.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about S&K Oil Sales – what should we know?
The major goal that I want to achieve at my career is to become the head fryologist of ZECO as I continue to grow as an all-rounded businessman in my own craft. Also, I do consider the possibility of going back to college to get the necessary knowledge that I need to push myself into something greater while helping the company in the process. But, I want to enjoy my job as a rewarding career while I share my knowledge with other aspiring business students. I would be a wise and seasoned businessman in the room. Whether if this job includes my knowledge that I have learned from a classroom or a workbench, I continue to prevail in my future endeavors.
Also, I have considered the possibility of running for public office in my own state that I am proud to live in and represent. Since there is there are many things that are happening in the world where our elected officials often ignore these problems. As an individual with Autism, it is important for people like me to get involved in decisions that our elected officials always makes for us. One day, I may become that elected official that unite the country through common sense and compromise from both parties.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I may be the captain of the ship, but I did have many crewmembers who had helped me make my dreams become a reality. Many of these crewmembers were mentors, best friends, and many of them were role models in business and politics. But I will list about two people in bullet point form.

• My Mother, Kim McMahon- My mother is the major force into helping me guiding me into the right path. She is realistic and direct in her parenting and it resulted in me becoming the man that I am today.
• My Mentor, Conrad Canter- The brilliant inventor who has helped me to improve my work ethic and critical thinking skills in the workplace. His teaching might be brunt and firm, but that mentality has made me a better student as a result.

As many years of my life continues to go on, I will face new obstacles in my path. I view these as a chance to outperform my own doubts. The doubts turned into an income of self-growth and self-respect. One day, when I am married and have a family of my own. Those principles and ideals will be on their own mindsets. When there is a new challenger, I will accept your challenge. And I genuinely hope that my readers will get the same drive to do the same. So, never ever give up on your goals and passion.
