Meet Sean Derivan of Jesse Luggage Systems and Precision Metal Mfg in East Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Derivan.

Sean, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started PMM in 2007 after leaving my steady job to try to build a small and successful company in the metal fabrication business. Our main focus was job shop type work, building parts and assemblies for outside customers. Our main focus today remains the same, and we have been meeting the needs of our customers now for almost 11 years. We have added several staff members to take on the tasks that are necessary to meet those needs and we are growing at a measured pace.

I purchased Jesse Luggage Systems in June of 2017 after discussions with the previous owner, who has been a customer of PMM for many years. JLS sells Adventure Motorcycle Luggage. PMM continues to manufacture the products for Jesse Luggage Systems and I get to play an integral part in the design and manufacture of the products. We are currently designing several new products that we will bring to market very soon.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road to success has had its ups and downs. Just when you think you understand your business, there is some sort of small shift in the market that will have you rethinking your approach. Growth is very stressful and expensive. I’ve really had to learn to measure my response to pretty much every aspect of the business.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Jesse Luggage Systems and Precision Metal Mfg – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Precision Metal Mfg, specializes in the short run production of steel, stainless steel and aluminum parts for our customers. We are able to supply our customers with small production runs or even a one-off part. That can be difficult to find in a world where companies want to manufacture hundreds or thousands of parts. Although we would like to do the same, we have found that we are better positioned to do the smaller jobs right now and that’s where we put our focus.

As for Jesse Luggage Systems, well, JLS has been in the adventure motorcycle scene for 25 years and has developed a reputation for delivering some of the toughest hard panniers in the world. Which, we do in fact, have our products all over the world. We cater mostly to the real “adventure spirited” rider who travels the world on a motorcycle and needs the absolutely toughest luggage they can count on for the long trips.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The best things about our city, in my opinion, is the cuisine. I love trying new foods and there are plenty of really fascinating places to eat here.

What I like least is the traffic and population. I was raised in Port Clinton, OH, which is a pretty small city and a rather quiet town. Not so much here.
