Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Serkland.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Scott. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
For years I made an honest living as a mild-mannered freelance illustrator and graphic designer, developing creative solutions for a number of corporate clients. As much as I loved using my creativity to bring awareness other company’s’ products and services, I always longed to do something more, something slightly sinister. I wanted to create the kind of work that wasn’t necessarily looked upon favorably amongst the corporate world.
Since I was a child I have been infatuated with the science fiction genre. It didn’t matter if it was radioactive fallout resulting in giant kaiju monsters rampaging through on the streets of Tokyo, killer robots rising up against their human oppressors or a biological outbreak infecting half of the world’s population turning them into flesh-eating zombies. There was always one thing in common, somehow science had gone horribly wrong. Mad science and technology run amok has always been a huge influence in the work I wanted to create.
More and more I found myself retreating to my secret underground lair, pouring my heart and soul into designing art prints, comic books, apparel, and novelties all of which featured a warped retro-future, mad science aesthetic.
In the beginning, I had this maniacal idea that I was going to use my art to take over the world. I soon realized that world domination was a lonely business so I formed Serkworks Art Labs, a kind of mad scientist supply company that offers a wide array of products that helps assist like-minded evil-geniuses, mad scientists, and supervillains achieve their own diabolical goals.
Has it been a smooth road?
Believe it or not, there aren’t a heck of a lot of evil geniuses running around plotting to take over the world. Some might say that this is a good thing, but it’s bad for business. I deal with a very niche almost non-existent market. That can be challenging, but I started to notice that not everyone who gravitated to my work had their minds set on world conquest. There are also a lot of do-gooders out there who are way into science and nerdy stuff and who aren’t afraid to let their geek flag fly.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Serkworks Art Labs story. Tell us more about the business.
Serkworks Art Labs specializes in the art of mad science. It all began with a simple question “If I was an evil genius, where would I go to find everything I need to carry out my nefarious plans.” I was surprised and a bit shocked to learn that such a place didn’t really exist. Realizing that this was an entirely untapped market. I took the opportunity to build the foundation for the world’s first mad science supply company.
Now, with Serkworks Art Labs, if you want to spruce up your secret hideout you’re in luck. We have a line of decorative art prints perfect for making a home sweet home out of your hollowed out volcano, underwater laboratory, or foreboding castle stronghold. If you’re planning to take over the world you should look good doing it, so Serkworks Art Labs carries a line of fashionable t-shirts, bow ties, and messenger bags perfect for even the most discerning of supervillains. Serkworks Art Labs even has something for the amateur mad scientist in training. We carry an assortment of experimental lab products to help you get started. Basically, if you have a love of robots, aliens, zombies, and other imminent threats to humanity, we probably have just the thing for you.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The world is shaping up to be a crazy place, and we’re starting to see more and more megalomaniacs pop up seemingly out of the woodwork. It may be that this little niche market may not stay niche for much longer. The more lunatics that rear their ugly heads, the greater the need for a product line like ours. On the flipside, the more insane this world gets the more people will need a little humor and levity to get them through the day. Either way, it’s a win-win situation for us.
