Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Schafer, Kyle Schafer, Jessica Schafer, Trevor Johl.
Schafer Haus began in the Spring of 2012 when guitarist/vocalist Scott Schafer joined forces with brother Kyle Schafer (guitar/vocals) and sister-in-law Jessica Schafer (vocals) with the intention of putting together a simple three track songwriting demo. However, after listening to the sound, the three created together they realized they had something unique, and the three songs quickly turned into a 13. Turned off by the state of the “music industry” and fueled by an inherent punk rock/DIY ethos, the family band was compelled to release the songs independently as a full-length album.
Joined by lead guitarist Trevor Johl, the four musicians completed the album “Country Music for the Masses, Vol I.” in 2015. The album with the tongue in cheek title affectionately referred to as, “The Mix Tape,” contains a little something for everyone. The record is a unique blend of “Americana” with some good old fashioned rock and roll, country, blues and alternative all in the mix. The compelling anthems contain foot-stomping rhythms, conscious lyrics, beautiful vocal harmonies, and soulful guitar lines. Schafer Haus began their own podcast in 2016 and are currently in the studio recording their latest record which, will have singles ready to drop early 2019!
Please tell us about your art.
If there’s an “objective” to the artistic process we’re attempting to create something that makes us, and the listener feel something; whatever the emotion. There’s an infinite amount of music out there for people to choose from so, at the end of the day Schafer Haus is really looking to make something inspiring. When we’re writing a song, we’re usually drawing from our own personal experiences as well as whatever is going on in the world at the time. After the “message” or feeling we’re drawing from comes through, we’ll transpose our thoughts and emotions into something that’s relatable to other people. If we are able to record a lyric, a feeling or soundscape that’s compelling to us as music fans, they were fairly confident we’ve got something worth pursuing, and we’ll move forward to complete the track.
If we feel like the song is working or isn’t moving us in some way then, we’ll either abandon it or revisit it at a later time. We love creating music that makes you think a little bit but, at the same time has groove or a hook that gets you tapping your toe or singing along before the song ends. We feel when we’ve done our job well, the joy and the energy that goes into the writing and recording translates easily to the listener. Hopefully, the songs we write and the music we perform can be enjoyed by anyone regardless of the reason they’ve chosen to listen and maybe, motivates them to share their special gifts with the world!
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
Contact other artists and creatives on social media. We feel like it’s easier than ever to get in contact with other like-minded individuals. Just “slide into their DM’s,” as the kids say! What have you got to lose? Hopefully, that will lead you to come face to face meetings where you can begin to form a real community and help each other with whatever issues you’re currently struggling with!
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
