Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott and Cara Prior.
Scott and Cara, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In 2011, we became active with the Occupy Movement in Phoenix. As we both have full time jobs, our assistance was mostly dropping off food, coffee, and anything else we could do on the way to and from work. We did spend time down at the plaza on the weekends, and had several conversations with the people that were staying full time at the plaza. A common theme among the folks was that politicians didn’t care about anything other than getting elected and making money. It was then that we decided to run for the AZ Legislature. Scott was able to get on the ballot in 2012, but Cara was only able to be a write in. After that election cycle, we decided to try again. We both made it on the ballot in 2014. As we were going through the campaigns, we saw that people were looking for some sort of outlet; a way to express themselves. Progressive Voices of Arizona was born. We began broadcasting in 2014, we took a break during the 2016 election cycle as we both again ran for the Arizona Legislature, and then began broadcasting again in late 2016. We have been broadcasting ever since. We sometimes broadcast from remote locations: The We the People Summit in Phoenix, Secular Day at the Capitol, and while out camping with our dogs on the RV. Our goal is to get people to communicate and create constructive dialog about what is going on in Arizona and the United States.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing is ever a smooth road. we have had equipment issues, financing issues, shortage of guests, and times where we just didn’t feel like stepping up to the microphone.
Progressive Voices of Arizona – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Progressive voices broadcasts live every Friday night at 6pm Arizona time. We specialize in talking about current events, focusing on discussion and solutions. We are known for being pretty open and direct, and even if we disagree, we will still respect the opinions of others. We also are known for only broadcasting our podcast live: we do not like ‘canned shows’ that can be accused of being edited for content.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
We define success on the ability to make positive changes in our community. We look for people to be on our show that have the ability to move past ideology and present logical ideas and solutions.
