Today we’d like to introduce you to Scorpion vs. Tarantula.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
We’ve been twisting and burning all over Arizona and California for 10 years now. Led by our indomitable frontwoman, L. Hotshot, our band is known for its supercharged live show. Audience interaction, women joining us onstage for dancing, septuagenarians picking up a tambourine and shaking it with us — it’s all part of the SvT experience. And we’re just as at home playing on the floor of a dive bar as we are rocking some of the bigger clubs in Phoenix.
Please tell us about your art.
Though we’re not strictly a feminist rock band, we hope to convey a message of female empowerment and self-confidence. That’s all L. And both she and Tana Satana, our bass player, have proved to be an inspiration to female rockers in Phoenix. A unique combination of toughness and vulnerability and confidence mixed with self-deprecation is what they pull off best. In terms of technique and musical originality, you could argue we’re rather artless, but if art is about gut-level reaction, grabbing your attention, and connecting with an audience, then I guess we’ll call ourselves artists. We’re not a joke band by any means, but there’s more than a little wink-and-nudge in how we view rock music. In other words, we play serious songs, but we don’t take rock and roll too seriously. We like to think we’re playing dumb music for smart people.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
The best way to connect if you’re trying to play rock and roll at the grassroots level is be nice to other bands, do what you’re supposed to do, be respectful, and just simply act right. Tough for some, we know.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Financially, we support ourselves. There’s no money to be made at our level, only money to be spent. The only way to truly support a band like ours is to show up at the bar and have a good time with us. That’s why we keep doing it after 10 years.
