Today we’d like to introduce you to Sasha Lovett.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sasha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Six years ago when my husband and I got married we decided my retail management position was not going to be a family friendly schedule. I was averaging 70 hours a week and never had a holiday off and I was on my way to being a step-mom of then a two and four year old and would be moving to Phoenix from the Pacific Northwest where I spent my first 26 years of life. When landing in Arizona I decided Hair was going to be my back up plan and since I had previously dropped out of hair school at 18 it would be easy to pick up. I attended Avalon School of Cosmetology in Mesa, AZ and found the truest passion I had ever had. Hair came natural, I loved meeting new people and knew there was potential for travel so this was it, my new career. I found Madison Avenue and because it was locally owned and offered employees benefits and a small family feels with a big clientele and 20 years in the valley, I knew no one here and knew the established name was the roof I wanted to build my business under. I have been at Madison Avenue for nearly five years now and I love the freedom to build my own business within their business and love the support given by the owners and management. I recently studied hair in Las Vegas, New York and am headed to Miami next week for additional education. I am a Redken certified colorist and love all the continuing education. I can provide for my family, travel, and meet new people daily while being surrounded by art and inspiration. My love for social media and supporting small businesses has grown my business so quickly and has surrounded me with the type of like minded business savvy locals that keep my creative mind on the go.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Never smooth. Trials and tribulations are part of every life story. From being brand new to Arizona and knowing no one to try new things that become trendy in the hair industry and failing to result in unhappy clients and to learn to communicate and accept for my faults I have learned something new every single day. This industry will never become stagnant and finding the motivation to constantly stay inspired and offer my clients the newest latest and greatest has been a challenge, especially while still giving to yourself and your family. Every bump has been worth it and I wouldn’t trade this long windy road for anything.
Please tell us about your business.
Madison Avenue is owned by The Larusso’s a local family that opened their doors almost 22 years ago. They are about their people whether consumers or employees. Within their doors, they support me in growing my business my way and there is no cap on how successful I can become. I can network outside just our doors, do the type of hair I want to do and they are all ears to new ideas. Most recently I became our social media guru as it has been a work in progress for us, mostly because 22 years ago it wasn’t needed. I love teaching it and helping grow our business not only for myself but for the company as a whole. I specialize in balayage, a unique highlighting technique, wedding and event styling and color corrections, but I love doing it all. I feel like as a salon we are that old beautician feels with a new vastly educated flair. We offer the top end customer service with the highest educated stylists and with an open mind, we as a company are always growing and expanding the brand to offer the top end service our clients deserve.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Recently, for myself, Instagram networking and meetups with photographers, clothing brands and local boss humans in the area have become not only a good way to continue to grow my business but a great way to keep up on my passion and expand my knowledge of the industry. I have made it a mission to seek out other local businesses, trade information and support those who best support the phoenix locals best. While these changes don’t directly grow my bank account they do grow my motivation, social circle and give me a platform to play with new styles that clients don’t come into an everyday salon asking for. More of my creative platform I guess.
