Meet Sarah Williams of SJWilliams Photography in Tucson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Williams.

Sarah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
So, I was raised in a very strict household and taught that anything less than a college degree was not acceptable. Right after graduating high school, I jumped into college and started working toward acceptance to pre-medical school at the University of Arizona. After a few years, I was finally accepted and began my semester with a lot of excitement toward my future. After a while, that excitement began to fade and I became really unhappy. I started to feel like I was going to school only to fulfill what my parents wanted of me, but it wasn’t actually what I wanted for myself. I always felt like I had a creative, artsy side, but I had never really gotten the chance to explore it. I started taking frequent study breaks to go downtown and photograph random things/ people with my iPhone. I found so much happiness in capturing these random candid moments between people, that I realized I wanted to pursue photography in a larger aspect. I dropped out of school the following semester, bought my first Nikon DSLR and haven’t put it down ever since.

Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Nobody told me how hard it would be trying to maintain a business when you’re the only employee. There is too much work that goes on behind the scenes, like marketing, promoting, advertising, keeping up with contracts, inquiries, session bookings, equipment maintenance, etc that it can be discouraging when you have slow months and aren’t hitting certain goals. There have been times where I’ve questioned if giving up my education was worth it, but like with any business, there are ups and downs and the downs don’t last forever.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a lifestyle and wedding photographer in Tucson, Arizona. I have a passion for turning fleeting moments into documented, tangible memories. My style is simple and relaxed. I believe in natural light, unique details, raw emotions and capturing the true essence of an individual. My proudest moment so far has been the fact that I’ve been able to build my business to what is in less than a year. I think my determination and drive sets me apart from others. When I set my mind to something, I will make it happen.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love so much about this city, the beautiful mountain views everywhere you turn, the cacti, every historical building/ church, and of course our breathtaking sunrises and sunsets! There is so much beauty to be captured in Tucson, I can’t think of what I like least about being here.
