Meet Sarah Keith of Mammoth Mercantile

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Keith.

Hi Sarah , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The idea for Mammoth Mercantile started with a coincidence almost too perfect to ignore. In 2023, over casual introductions and easy conversation, Teissia and I discovered that we had once lived in the same Los Angeles apartment, though not at the same time. When Teissia left her cozy Franklin Village home in 2011 for a life in New York City, I moved in. More than a decade later, in the crisp mountain air of Mammoth Lakes, we met for the very first time. By the end of the evening, we were sketching a vision neither could shake: a shop that felt like home, a place where the heartbeat of the community could be felt in every detail.grew out of a shared love for this community and a desire to create a space that truly reflects the spirit of Mammoth.

When we moved here, we realized there wasn’t a place that blended elevated groceries with curated lifestyle goods. A place that felt welcoming, intentional, and rooted in the landscape. What started as a casual conversation quickly turned into a vision: a shop that felt like a love letter to Mammoth Lakes, where quality, beauty, and community live side by side on every shelf.

Our journeys to that moment were anything but ordinary. Teissia spent over a decade building a global event planning company, designing weddings and celebrations around the world, before trading international travel for the quiet rhythms of mountain life. I left Hollywood for culinary school, became a private chef and caterer, raised two children, and built a bold ceramics brand supporting cancer organizations.

Along the way, we both faced personal challenges that shaped how we approach life and business. I survived breast cancer, and Teissia navigated infertility. These experiences instilled in us a mindfulness about what we put into our bodies and what we put into the world. Our vision for Mammoth Mercantile grew from that philosophy: creating a place that offered clean products, organic foods, ethically sourced goods, and pantry staples people can trust.

Mammoth Mercantile is the sum of our journeys. The shop is the perfect blend of our talents and lived experiences. The shop is part general store, part gathering place, and entirely heart. It is a place where stories intersect, neighbors connect, and every detail reflects care, creativity, and community.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I feel like we have been insanely lucky so far. It hasn’t been a perfectly smooth road, especially because neither Teissia nor I came into Mammoth Mercantile with a retail background, but it has been so fun and exciting to see our vision come to life. We did have to learn almost everything as we went—how to manage inventory, price products, work with vendors, and understand the day-to-day operations of running a retail business. There was a steep learning curve, and plenty of trial and error along the way, but having a partner who is a best friend and knowing that we are on the same page about our values has made the journey really wonderful

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Mammoth Mercantile is our modern take on the classic general store. A thoughtfully curated blend of artisanal groceries, clean essentials, and mountain-inspired lifestyle goods. You’ll find everything from organic produce, cheeses, and pantry staples to beautiful home wares, local artisan products, non toxic personal items, and specialty treats you didn’t know you needed. We have a little bit of everything for everyone, from your friend’s new baby, to your aunt’s dog. It’s equal parts provisions market and cozy boutique, designed to meet the needs of both everyday life and special moments in the mountains.

We curate with three things in mind: clean ingredients, thoughtful design, and integrity of origin. If we wouldn’t use it in our own homes, it doesn’t go on our shelves. We prioritize woman-owned, local, small-batch, organic, and sustainable brands whenever possible. Every item is chosen with intention, and every product has a story, whether it’s milled nearby, crafted by a local maker, or sourced from a brand that aligns with our values.

It is also so important to us that people to feel instantly welcomed, like they’ve stepped into a friend’s living room. The space is meant to feel calm, beautiful, and inspiring, but also familiar and down-to-earth. Whether someone is popping in for milk, picking up après snacks, or searching for the perfect gift, we hope they feel seen, at home, and part of something special.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to us is the feeling our customers get the moment they walk through our doors. We are intentional about carrying what we believe are the absolute best products, items that align with our values of sustainability, non-toxic ingredients, and genuine support for our local community. We want our customers to feel confident that everything they find here is something they can trust and that their purchases are making a positive difference.

In today’s modern world, so much of our connection to each other and to the earth has been lost. At Mammoth Mercantile, we want to help restore that connection by honoring where products come from and how they’re made. We want to know who grew the food, how the animals were raised, or how materials were sourced. We truly believe these things matter on a molecular level.

We are proud to support local makers, with the majority of our products coming from women-owned businesses, and we hope people can really see the impact of shopping small. Every purchase tells a story, strengthens our community, and helps keep those values alive.
