Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Embree.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sarah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I found my love for photography when I was 18 years old. My best friend had just had a baby and she felt really self-conscious. I wanted her to know she was still beautiful (if not more) so I took her point and shoot camera and did my first ever “photo shoot”. When she saw the photos she loved them so much and after seeing the joy I brought to her I knew this was my calling. Showing people how I see them.
I worked for a few chain companies and learned that I loved working primarily with children. Although I did not learn much about photography per say, I did learn how to work with children, how to interact with clients & gained some confidence and return I taught myself how to use a digital camera and editing software.
Fast forward a few years and having 4 kids later, I learned that childhood and imagination are so fleeting. I love creating a whimsical fairy tale like settings because I want to create memories that are happy and fun.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’m going to be 100% honest. It has not been a smooth road. I never went to college or took any classes on photography or editing. I didn’t come from money so all my equipment was bought through hard work.
Being self-taught has its disadvantages but all in all, I think it’s made me grow as an artist. Not being trained by someone else has helped me become unique in my style and not by the book. I used to compare myself (and sometimes still do) to other photographers, and I spent a lot of my time feeling like I didn’t know what I was doing, or inadequate.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Embree Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in conceptual photography primarily with children. I am known for my fairy tale princess, unicorn and mermaid themed sessions. I am proud of my company because I started from zero and I actually found something (conceptual art) that peeks my creative energy and essentially I get to play make-believe with children. Who wouldn’t want that for a job?
I feel my vision, love and hard work learning new things on my own sets me apart from others.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think overall that I’ve been pretty lucky in life. I never thought I’d inspire people to commission my work. To me, that is luck in itself.
