Today we’d like to introduce you to Saraely Ortega.
Saraely, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in the South until I was about 13 years old. Going from a small town to a big city opened my world up to so many possibilities. My mom, grandma, and my mom’s best friend were the ones opening me up to candies, traditional Mexican sweets and baked goods. When my family moved from Tennessee to Arizona, I quickly began to explore the different cuisines available. I explored Mediterranean, Japanese, Thai. Everything I could and the more the better. In high school, I began baking for friends and any reason I could come up with. I remember coming up with the name for Snob’s Delight. I was messing around with letters and landed on Snob. Some how the rest fell into place. I’d always talked about having my shop. I still want a coffee shop in the future. Slowly I started taking orders on the side until it made sense for me to launch into action. I started signing up for farmer’s markets and selling more. It’s been a journey filled with many lessons and I’m excited about the future and seeing how many other food snobs I can get to share my food with!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has been bumpy but needed. We can’t expect everything handed to us. The important part of the struggle is the lessons learned. I’ve slowly learned through trial and error how better to run my business. I’ve learned the areas of baking and decorating that needed fine tuning. I don’t think I would be the baker I am were it not for the ups and downs, neither the woman I am today. Everything is a lesson, never a loss.
Please tell us about your business.
Snob’s Delight is about embracing the snob in each of us. We all want the best right? Why limit ourselves to food? Everyone should strive for better whenever possible. Snob’s Delight specializes in baked goods both fancy and not. I make personalized cakes for all occasions. If someone is not a cake person I also offer candies and brownies.
I know as a consumer I can go just about anywhere and buy something sweet. However, I also know that my baking has always had a different touch. My grandma always told me I had the hands for it. Maybe I’m being too full of myself but I believe her. I know my baking has something different. It’s nice making money off of what I love but it is nice seeing people smile when they eat my food. I read somewhere that the best way to people’s hearts is through their stomachs. Let’s just say that I like bringing people together one cake at a time.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My support system is strong. From the beginning, my mom and grandma were the ones teaching me my foundations of baking. Honestly, all of my family is rooted in food. I couldn’t be where I am at without my girlfriend. She has always been my go to in decorating cakes and pushing my baking to the next level.
