Meet Sara Cervantes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Cervantes.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I discovered my love of pottery by accident in high school. I was fascinated by the idea that you can turn a lump of clay into anything your imagination can come up with. Over the years I have taken many college classes and workshops to better develop my skills.

Please tell us about your art.
I want people to smile when they see my art. I am inspired by God’s beautiful creation. I love flowers and foliage. I get a thrill from throwing the pieces on the wheel. Later, I carve in flowers and paint them. I also enjoy building fairy houses. This allows my inner child a chance to come out and play. I pray my pottery inspires people to see the beauty in life and to keep dreaming.

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
I think the role of artist has always been the same. They represent the culture of the time. Based on pop culture, political environments and even the economy, that can change the look or the medium in which an artist’s works. The role of an artist is to be true to who they are. Art is an outward expression of the thoughts and feelings of a person. I use my art as an escape from all the craziness of life. I hope people are transported to a happy place with my work.
