Meet Sandi Cusick of Fit Life Zyia in North Phoenix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandi Cusick.

Sandi, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
18 months ago, I was living the life I had always dreamed of living. I had everything I needed and more. A loving husband who worked hard for his family, so I was able to stay home with our two children. Our youngest had just started preschool, so I now had a bonus of 12 hours of kid free time each week. I was living the hectic life of a stay at home mom to it’s fullest. I was a lunch packing, drop off/pick up taxi, errand running, house cleaning, laundry washing, toy organizing momma, and I ran a well oiled ship, and even had time to grab the occasional coffee or brunch with my girlfriends. Life was good or so it seemed. From the outside, I had a lot, but on the inside, I was craving more. I looked at my life and saw a great mom and wife, but I also saw a woman who had two college degrees who was in a serious rut. Almost 100% of my time was spent with, or doing something for my family but what about me? I was yearning for a way to regain my identity outside of mom and wife. I missed the social and intellectual aspects, and of course the financial benefits of working outside of the home but I didn’t want to give up the title of a stay at home mom to get it all.

One day, while mindlessly scrolling Instagram (in the pickup line no less), I saw a pair of pink leggings with pockets! They were amazing! One thing led to another. A few weeks (and a gentle nudge from my husband) later, I became a Rep for Zyia Active.

Today, I run my online activewear shop and help other women do the same. The dishes sit in the sink a little longer, most days the house is messier and my husband’s honey-do list is much longer; but I get to contribute financially to my family, and still be there for all the field trips. Best of all, I get to add businesswoman to my resume of life. And that is how a pair of hot pink leggings changed my world.

Has it been a smooth road?
They say nothing worth doing is ever easy and small business ownership is no exception. There have absolutely been obstacles. Most come from the stigma or stereotypes of direct sales or multi-level marketing companies. I still have family members who think I’m caught up in a pyramid scheme, yet they don’t ask me to explain the differences. I understand them though, I had hesitations too. I had always said no, nope, not me, never, whenever I was approached to sign up with one. I ended up eating my own words when I was presented with this opportunity. I told myself every excuse in the book; I’m not salesy, I don’t have time, I shouldn’t spend our money on this, no one will buy from me, I’m not good on social media… but I have been open to learning the systems that are already in place, I am given the freedom to run my business in any way I feel fit and I truly believe in this company and everything they stand for. Those things, along with an unparalleled product, help me welcome each new day! It may not always be easy, but it is always worth it.

Tell us more about the business.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I believe our industry as a whole will continue to grow. At what rate I am not sure, but I know more and more people are realizing it is tough to make enough money to realize your dreams on just one income. So many people are looking for additional income opportunities. As far as Zyia Active goes, I think we have a great opportunity to help us reach our goals and dreams because the activewear industry as a whole is huge and getting bigger each year. As a company, we had record-breaking months in July and August of this year (still TBD for September). Just look around the next time you walk out of your home, almost everyone you see is wearing some sort of activewear. I hope to be part of that growth in my own small way to help my family and many other families as well.
