Meet Marco Castillo of San Tan Valley Coops

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marco Castillo.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was a construction Superintendent for a well-known home builder in the Valley until the housing market took an unexpected turn in 2006, a lot of us were let go. I struggled to find small jobs for two years while supporting my three young daughters.

I met my wife in 2007. She wanted to move back to the San Tan Valley area so we could have land and room for our now five kids. (My three girls, her two sons). We bought a little starter home and she wanted chickens. So she looked online and found some chicken coops that were very basic, not well made and very overpriced. So I decided to build her one.

It wasn’t the prettiest but worked well for our small flock. She had an idea to put it up for sale online to see if we could sell more like it. Well, that day it sold. So I was back to building another one for our chickens. Yeah, she sold that one too.

She kept advertising them, new designs kept coming in and after being a hobby business for a few years, San Tan Valley Coops was formed.

We have traveled all over Nevada, California, New Mexico, and all the way to Tennessee personally delivering our custom chicken coops.

We remain a family-owned and operated business who do our very best to provide quality products for families to enjoy for years.

We have created a brand that is well known across many states. We work hard and have enjoyed the many road trips we’ve had with our kids who are all grown now but still step in to help at a moment’s notice. We are thankful to our loyal customers who allowed us to spend more time with our kids by buying from us, the little guys.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Overall it’s been a smooth road business-wise. We did have a huge hurdle to overcome where our daughter was kicked in the face by her horse which was during a really busy time for us. Our customers were so understanding and supportive through her three surgeries. Being self-employed allowed us the opportunity to always have someone with her through her recovery. But overcoming the financial strain was a difficult time for our family.

Please tell us about San Tan Valley Coops.
We build custom chicken coops, playhouses, tables, and just about anything built of wood.

We stand out because we don’t do cookie-cutter builds. A customer can send us a picture, the size they want and we build it as close to the original as possible. They have the total freedom to modify anything they like. This is why we don’t carry pre-built items. There’s always changes, so we might as well get it right how they want it the first time. Our customers don’t have to settle or compromise.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
