Meet Sam Felker of Lex River Productions in Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Felker.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sam. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I know this might sound kind of odd, but I was the owner/operator of a successful pool service company in Gilbert Az from 2009 to 2017. Ever since graduating from high school, I have worked different jobs, cared little about school and was trying to find my true calling.

Little did I know, it would be film/videography, something I barely knew anything about. I got in to film work about six years ago when I was hired part-time as a grip for a local production company. I immediately fell in love with being on set and helping in the camera department whenever I was allowed.

While I was still operating the pool business, I decided to get a degree in Motion Picture Production at the Scottsdale School of Film and Theater where I was the Director of Photography of the Capstone short film project, “La Esencia,” of which I was awarded Best Cinematography at the Scottsdale Short Film festival.

Over the past six years, I have shot and worked on everything from broadcast commercials, short film narratives, full features, documentaries, promotional video, real estate video, weddings, and scene recreations.

I love using cutting edge technology like the RED digital cinema cameras and the Freefly Systems Movi camera stabilizer, and have spent the last few years studying the ins and outs of these extremely intricate products. After all these years of searching, I now find my calling in cinematography, and I couldn’t be happier.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it’s been extremely difficult. Managing a business, I was trying to sell, going to school, trying to start up a new company while trying to keep a normal home is extremely difficult.

We also suffered the loss of both of my wife’s parents in less than a six month period due to cancer and then suicide, while we were raising a two 1/2-year-old and pregnant with another.

Although it’s been tough, my wife and I are extremely blessed to have happy, healthy children, and two individual growing businesses as she has recently started a new hair salon “Shapes & Shades.”

Lex River Productions – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am the owner of Lex River Productions LLC, a video production company here in Az. We do everything from wedding videography, short films, commercials to documentaries and even full features. We specialize in getting precise movement out of the camera in all of our videos whether it’s using a Dana dolly or Steadicam(MOVI) or even a Fischer dolly, we love smooth camera moves.

We use top of the line equipment in all of our productions including products like RED, Canon, Freefly systems, etc. and we are specifically known for our MOVI and RED operational skills. What sets us apart from other production companies is: We are honest and reliable, offer unique and modern style, and we are always willing to go the extra mile to get the client a product they love.

Most current project I am Director of Photography for is a documentary fighting to save the junior college football program in Maricopa County from being eliminated.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I personally define success as finding happiness in your career and your everyday life.

This world is so caught up with money and material things that we lose sight of what’s truly important, and that’s taking care of ourselves and those we love, stressing a little less and laughing a lot more.

Having a job you love doing and look forward to going to, makes people a lot happier.
