Today we’d like to introduce you to Saiber Soland.
Saiber, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My father passed away when I was eight years old, so I was raised mostly by my mom and my sister until about 16 years old. My mom worked for a plastic surgeon in Scottsdale and my sister and I were getting our teeth whitened and chemical peels probably from way too early of an age. I sold purses and jeans to the girls and their moms at my high school I would order from China when I was 15. I was also a super jock who played sports 365 days a year, but I still took care of my skin and my appearance. I was taught that was important by being raised by my mother. One of my goals of being a straight male esthetician is to make it normal to take care of yourself. It’s not a girly thing. It should be looked at no differently than going to the dentist. I want to talk to schools and sports teams to help normalize men’s skincare.
I was working for a software company for about eight years and I just wasn’t happy with that 9 to 5 “not seeing my kids and family as much as I want” type of job. My wife got pregnant and I started to make all-natural stretch mark creams, eczema creams and just all different types of stuff I knew would be safe for my wife and our new baby.
I quit my job at the software company about two months before my daughter was born because I wanted to pursue a life in skincare. I started going to school and graduated from the very top of my class. I was the first male to ever graduate from my school. It was hard ignoring all of the weird looks and comments but I did it.
When I was applying to school, I had one guy from the head of the school (uninvited) come in and say “You know you have to learn Brazilians right?” and looked at me with this weird look. I said, “That’s fine, I have a beautiful wife that can come in and be my model.” I was trying to hint at him that getting up close and personal with ladies was not why I was getting into this line of work.
After I graduated, I went to work for a large chain massage/facial spa. They worked very hard and paid me very little. They paid me minimum wage straight out of school. I spent all of my time walking around downtown Gilbert handing out flyers and talking everyone into coming to see me.
Finally, after some very small paychecks and a lot of time away from my family, I said to myself, “I am doing so much work for this company, I should have just stayed in software!” My wife said, “If you’re going to do that much work for them, let’s just do it for ourselves.” And then, Soul and Beauty Skin was created.
Has it been a smooth road?
Because I am a male esthetician, we have run into our fair share of roadblocks. It’s something I know I am going to have to deal with so I have never let it bother me. Instead, I use it as an advantage to stand out and be unique. I use the momentum of being different in the industry to help push me forward and use that attention for positive reasons. Like eventually talking to schools about normalizing men’s skincare or just “skincare” if men’s skincare is too not #2019 :).
We also have two children and my wife works a full-time job. Our parents help us with childcare and without that help, we would not be able to do any of this. We have a lot of family support that we are very grateful for. Also, starting fresh at 28 years old with no clientele was a bumpy road on its own. We have been consistent with using every resource that becomes available to us to continue to grow and stay in the spotlight.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
The name of our business is Soul and Beauty Skin. The name is a play on our last name “Soland”. We wanted a name that was custom to us and if someone else ended up using it we could still say, “Hey man, it’s my last name too.” We are a vegan skin spa and we specialize in truly one of a kind treatments.
I don’t just do facials, I am extremely passionate about setting the entire vibe. I like to make sure all of your emotions and feelings for that hour are pleasant. I always find out what kind of music the person likes and the kind of smells they enjoy. I always infuse the steamed towels and fill the room with the scent they chose. I’ll hardly ask the person directly, and I’ll guess based on what I know about them, ask someone who bought them the treatment, but as a last resort, I’ll ask the person directly.
Music to their taste will be in the background. Usually, something along the lines of Bob Marley or Elton John. I’ve even had clients who’ve enjoyed listening to Metallica. Nothing is off-limits.
We use a hand/foot cream we make ourselves with all organic ingredients that are included with every treatment. I pay attention to everything a person tells me so the next time they come in I can add another personalized touch to their treatment. Also, Saturday and Sunday mid-morning facials come with mimosas, because why not!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel that Tempe has a very receptive population to a business like ours. We are health-oriented and the Tempe population lives a very health-based lifestyle. Downtown Tempe is a good city for a business like ours because there are so many people and students around all looking to learn and do new things to benefit themselves, from their health to their appearance. It’s just figuring out how to get our message to all of the people around us. The only downfall recently is there is a lot of construction, but with construction comes growth so we’re just trying to get through this construction and make it to the growth!
