Today we’d like to introduce you to Sadie Northway-Smith.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sadie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started Sucrose in January 2019, because I wanted to see more attention brought to my city and it’s youth artists! Since then, I’ve had tons of fun getting to work with everyone.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As fun as it’s been, there have definitely been a few struggles. Balancing Sucrose and all the work involved with it with high school and the rest of my life has been a challenge. Other than the time issue, it’s pretty much been smooth sailing!
Please tell us about your organization.
Sucrose is a zine, or self-published magazine, all about Southern Arizona’s youth art and music. A new issue is released every month, and three artists are featured per issue. Sucrose also does showcase events, and I’m working on getting some other projects going! It’s a free zine, and anyone can put pretty much anything they want in it, as long as they’re a Southern Arizonan and they consider themselves youth. There’s also a mailing list, which you can join by sending your mailing address to sucrosesubmissions@gmail.com, where you get each month’s issue sent to you for free!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment would have to be the showcase Sucrose put on this past July! Three wonderful youth bands (PELT, Communal, and Tonight’s Sunshine) performed, and three amazing youth artists (Magdalena Mirto, Colm Keeney, and John Conrad) showed their work! It was tons of fun, and represented what Sucrose is all about!
