Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Pierce.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started my business on April 11th, 2015. I have an associate degree in computer graphic design that I received from Phoenix College. At Phoenix College I was always told by professors and colleagues that I have a unique perspective on art.
I was learning the hard way that getting a design job is tough if you don’t have the proper experience or a bachelor’s degree. Going to interview after interview and not getting any calls back, I figured that I need a bachelor’s degree if I want to be taken seriously by employers. That is why I am continuing my education in Information Technology. Getting let down time after time in the job seeking process motivated me to start RPDesign.
About three months after RPDesign was born I got into photography. I am just now getting used to being called a “photographer” as I am an artist at heart. I got into photography to help get my business off the ground. It is easier for me at least to network as a photographer than it is as a graphic designer. I have learned that most photography clients need a graphic designer, so they go hand and hand. It was easy for me to find what kind of photography I would enjoy most. I noticed when I watched any kind of sport event I would watch the replays very closely. I would pay attention to every detail on the subject(s). From the background, face expression, arm sweat, jersey stretch everything. So, I went to a high school football game with my camera and I really enjoyed everything about it. Now I am the photographer for two different high school programs and I love it.
Why exactly did I start RPDesign? When I leave this place, I want my family to have land and a source of income to be able to call theirs. That could possibly set up my family for generations. I have a big vision for this company and I know exactly what I want to do, now I just must do it.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For the most part it has been smooth. I have only made one major investment and so far, it has brought me business. The only obstacle that is a challenge is customers that flake out or are not responsive. I think that just comes with being an entrepreneur.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the RPDesign story. Tell us more about the business.
RPDesign is a graphic design and photography company. We can provide logos, banners, brochures, flyers, cover art, t-shirt, envelopes, posters, newsletters, and postcard designs. We provide a variety of photography. Sports, engagement, prom, family, head-shots you name it.
What sets us apart is that we provide graphic design and photography at an exceeding level. Not many companies can give you both. The job I am most proud of is designing t-shirts for a middle school performing arts club. It is special to me because it is the biggest job I have done so far, and my art is getting exposed to a lot of eyes.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
No luck has taken a role. All I can say is that I am blessed for the opportunities that have presented themselves.
