Meet Ryan Bove of Grand Canyon State Painting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Bove.

Hi Ryan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started working for my parents’ company delivering outdoor kitchens and fire tables in 2005 when I graduated high school. That’s where I learned many skills like framing, tile work, stucco, and painting. I really liked working for the family business, I was passionate about building the products we sold, I made good money, and always thought this would be my career path. Unfortunately, the recession in ‘07-‘08, like several other businesses at that time, forced my parents’ company to close.

I tried a few different trades and ended up working at Amazon, where I was only making enough money to cover the bills. I knew in my heart, that I was happiest when working with my hands and from working for my parents’ company, I knew what it would take to run my own business and make it successful. My wife and I both agreed that the only way to make it happen would be to just go for it. So, I quit my job, set up an LLC, a business name, and Grand Canyon State Painting (GCSP) was born. Even though progress seemed to be going at a slow pace, my daughters and the support from my wife and family kept me motivated to keep going.

Fast forward to today, we are licensed, bonded, and insured, have an 8-member team, and running 3 crews. I’ve been lucky to not only have my wife, Tayler, join me on this journey, but also my brother and my friends. Tayler runs our office and handles the marketing. She’s a huge reason why we continue to expand. Watching something that you’ve put so much work into, finally evolve, is the best feeling. I’m proud of how far we’ve come and eager to see where it goes.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think all small businesses have some bumps and learning curves along the way and we knew that going in. But seeing our vision continue to grow, definitely outweighs any obstacles we’ve had.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Grand Canyon State Painting is a residential painting and home remodeling business based out of Surprise, Arizona, proudly serving the greater Phoenix area.

I’d say we’re best known for our excellent customer service, quality workmanship, competitive prices, and reliability. The consistency of all of those things combined are what sets us apart from others. Our team genuinely cares about our customers and we’re always respectful on every job.

In 2020 we launched an entire new brand identity featuring a new logo and website that I’m really excited about. The logo is the state shape of Arizona, where I was born and raised. It’s exactly what I had envisioned and it represents us so well.

What are you goals/dreams for the company?
My greatest goal is to see that GCSP not only succeeds for the sake of my family but to also provide good pay and a steady career for all members of my team. I feel like I’ve re-established a new family business that someday will still be around for my own children, families’ children and even friends’ children to be a part of.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice for anyone who’s just starting out is to believe in yourself, believe in your work, educate yourself and surround yourself with good people. Big things don’t happen overnight. I set goals for my business, hit them, and raise the bar higher. The road to success is never easy, but as long as you stay focused and driven, you can make anything happen.
