Meet Russell McGuire

Today we’d like to introduce you to Russell McGuire.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I have always been fascinated with photography. I remember my grandmother having an old Brownie reflex camera from the 1960’s that I would often pick up and play with when I visited her. I was fascinated by this fantastic tool that allowed me to capture a moment in time and relive it back in a photograph. Fast forward 20 plus years and I graduated college with a degree in photography. Like many people who graduate with a degree in liberal arts, I got a job doing something opposite of photography. It was not until I moved to Arizona five years ago that I started retaking landscape photographs. Something is fantastic about Arizona and the Southwest that draws me to go out and photograph.

Please tell us about your art.
I enjoy taking photos of places that not everyone gets to see. Mother Nature has done an impressive job of designing sites that are beyond beautiful and need to be shared with the world. My goal is to share these spots with people who might not have the opportunity ever to see them in person. If one person views my image and decides to take a trip to that spot, I consider my job complete.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
For me, choosing a path as a full-time landscape photographer was not an option. The photography world, and landscapes specifically, is an extremely oversaturated market. For most photographers, unless you are willing to do side jobs, it is tough to make a living at it. I use it as my outlet for creativity while I have a day job that pays the bills.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I am a very active member on Instagram. I not only post images but I try to tell a story of why I took the picture and what I was thinking and feeling while I did it.
