Meet Roy B Junior

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roy B Junior.

Roy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I got started in photography when I was in HS, however, I been in and out for many years now but as of late, I been in more so now than ever before. I was inspired to focus on my passion again. It was like all signs pointed toward it making sure I knew it and to never let it go, thus pursuing what makes me, me.

It all started when I first got my hands on a camera, it was so fun to be the one to capture everything. Every moment, movement, emotion, times I may otherwise never remember but now I can. It always puts a smile on my face.

Initially, I had a Nikon which I learned on for several years and over time I develop, grew and changed from Nikon to Canon to now Sony and now im in love with mirrorless cameras after using the one I love it.

Photography is a deep one for me since it’s my main artistic outlet and allows me to show how I feel, to be able to make what I see in my mind a reality. Its the only thing that I can’t stop thinking about no matter what I’m doing. I can be out and see someone doing something and be Inspired by it or pass by a place and want to use it for an idea for my next photo shoot or hear a song and paint a picture in my mind and then, create it in person for all to see.

This I believe is what makes me the photographer I want to be and helps me push myself to aspire to be more than I am now on a daily basis.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh, the struggles lol who doesn’t have one? Well, for me, my life has been a busy roller coaster for as long as I can remember. So, having something that can’t be destroyed or changed by anyone else but I made it easier for me to keep coming back to it.

I never really have a stable home space so keeping my stuff all over the place was the only way I could keep it. Some at my parent’s places or a far away storage area or at my girlfriend’s (now my wife) place when I could. I moved so much in my life that keeping my stuff in order was impossible, so in between residents, I would keep my mind balanced by using my phone to do street photography until I could get my actual camera again whenever that may be. Thank goodness for technology, there have been years of time I would be without my gear so I kept at it with what I could. In various way of snapping a few shots of a landscape in the rain or people doing the most random things that just caught my eye to see a space not used that I could make something out of that otherwise would never be seen that way.

Now, as an adult, I have two kids who keep me busy 24/7 as well as a full-time gig but still do my best to keep true to my passion.

Please tell us about Roy B Junior photography.
I’m known for doing edgy, creative, out their styles rather than just a simple photoshoot of three poses and done. It’s just not me. I need that creativity every time for me to feel energized. I guess what makes me different in my field is that I don’t tend to approach things in an orthodox way. I tend to approach it from a way it isn’t used over and over again and build off of it so when someone sees my work they know it’s me. I got through alot of photos doing so but hey, who doesn’t.

I guess thats also why I tend not to use studios so much as to on location shoots since they bring so much more than I could ask for and surprised me at times with things I wasn’t expecting to get involved and make it that much better or changes the setting I plan on using, so I end up doing something similar but slightly different and end up with a whole new idea that I came in with. Overall, I like the surprise of the outcome, kind of like life itself.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
That’s a good question, I’m not honestly sure? I think I will have to say the best memories I had as a kid was when me, my dad, and my brother would all go to eat at this restaurant that cooked homemade style breakfast like no other. Just the stuff to make you wanna start your day. My dad would take us there before we help him do side jobs for extra cash like landscaping or painting, you know, handy stuff like that would help us when we grew up. I’m sad to say that place closed down years ago but still one of my favorite memories I will always keep close. Especially now that we don’t all get that opportunity to do that anymore. I do miss that.
